Christmas is over and having spent most of it at my mum’s, I’ve really missed cooking my own food. So, today I tried cooking Tatws Popty (or Tatty Pot), a traditional Welsh dish made from potato and cheese. It didn’t specify a quantity for any of the ingredients, so I was free to use as much or little of anything as I liked. Well, that’s my excuse for polishing off the whole block of cheese anyway.
As you can see I don’t think I did too bad, although in the future I think I would parboil the potatoes for longer before transferring them to the oven. I was hoping it would turn out a bit more like the creamy potato and cheese pies I was used to eating in my school canteen, but the potatoes seemed like too much to swallow.
Anyway it was rather tasty, filling, cheap and easy to make. Probably best served as a side though – sausages made for a good choice in my case.
Here’s my version of the recipe:
As many potatoes as you like, depending on size of casserole or pie dish, peeled and sliced
Desired amount of onions, sliced
Desired amount of cheddar cheese, grated or sliced
Salt and pepper
Fresh sage, chopped
Butter for greasing
1) Parboil the potatoes and the onions for ten minutes until soft.
2) Drain the potatoes and the onions and layer them in a greased casserole or pie dish.
3) Sprinkle with the salt, the pepper and the sage.
4) Finish with a thick layer of cheese.
5) Bake in the oven for 30 minutes on 200oC or gas mark 7, until the cheese has melted and turned golden brown.
