Restaurant review: WOW Deli

Situated near the top of Churchill Way, Cardiff, just off Queen Street, WOW Deli shares its home with popular gay club, WOW Bar and Lounge. Serving hot comfort food, freshly-made sandwiches, coffee and cold drinks from a small kitchen next to the main venue, the deli is known for its legendary wedge sandwiches.

Freshly-made using thickly-sliced bread, spread with lashings of butter and stuffed to the brim with delicious ingredients like Welsh lamb with yoghurt and roast Mediterranean veg with mozzarella (from £3.50), you’ll struggle to find sandwiches like these anywhere else.
The menu features traditional favourites like fish and chips, jacket potatoes, bangers and mash, steaks, burgers and pie of the day, including several Welsh dishes like homemade Cawl, Welsh rarebit and faggots and peas.

Conveniently, the deli is just a short walk away from the office where I work, and on a few occasions over the past fortnight, my team have put in an order, and I just can’t help but get in on the action.

Wow! It’s the WOW Club Sandwich.

The first time we order, I go for the WOW Club Sandwich – thickly-cut bread filled with fried egg, bacon and hot meat of the day, £4.95. Looking at it as I took the photo really makes me think, “Wow,” just like the deli’s name. Eating it is just as good, too. Soft white bread, runny egg, lean bacon and hot roast beef make for a flavoursome combination.

The second time we order from the deli, I go for the majority choice of a Full Welsh Breakfast (£5.50), boasting three sausages, three rashers of bacon, two eggs (fried or scrambled), beans or tomatoes and two thick slices of hot, buttery toast, served in a polysterene tray. What better way to get through a Saturday in work?

Heaven in a plastic tray.

If, like me, you are limited for time on your lunch break, you can ring WOW Deli beforehand to place your order. But if you have time to spare, you could sit outside or take your food next door and eat it in the bar. As you can see from the prices of the food above, the value for money is pretty good. You can get a meal deal including a cold drink, sandwich and crisps for just £4.75, whereas students and 999 workers can save £1 on their order.

Pay WOW Deli a visit sometime and see for yourself how it lives up to its name!

Open seven days a week, serving food from 9am-4pm from Monday to Saturday, with Roast Dinner available from 12-4pm on Sunday for just £5.95.
