What better way to make the most of all the sunshine we’ve had recently, than by inviting some friends round for a BBQ?
This was exactly what I did this Bank Holiday weekend with one of my best friends, Dan. We decked out his back garden with multi-coloured fairy lights and snuggly blankets and held a late afternoon/early evening impromptu BBQ, just the two of us.
We shared some garlic prawns, beer can chicken and limited edition cheese and pickle burgers, all from M&S’s ‘The Grill’ range. At the moment, selected packs of meat, fish and poultry from the collection (including those I tried) are priced at 2 for £7, or 3 for £10.
The beer can chicken took a while to cook because it was a half-roast chicken on the bone, but it was worth the wait. It was easy to split into two pieces for sharing and the skin was crispy and flavoursome, while the beer can marinade helped the chicken to stay tender and moist. It had a rich, tangy taste, with a pinch of paprika.
Inspired by the traditional ploughman’s, the cheese and pickle burgers are part of M&S’s new Taste of the British Isles range, which celebrates the very best in nostalgic British foods. The pack contained four big, meaty burgers infused with cheddar cheese and tangy pickle.
The burgers were of a great quality and tasted pretty good, but the taste of cheese and pickle grew stronger with each mouthful. You definitely don’t need to serve these with cheese, even if you are fond of cheese burgers; I made the mistake of doing this and ended up having to remove the cheese.
Despite being a little too rich and cheesy for my liking, M&S’s cheese and pickle burgers offer a refreshing alternative to the traditional beef burger, sure to prove popular at any BBQ.
The king prawn skewers were covered in freshly chopped wild garlic and lemon juice. Each pack contained five skewers, with two prawns on each. Succulent and juicy, the prawns tasted amazing paired with the garlic and lemon. Both Dan and I agreed these were our favourite of the three M&S ‘The Grill’ dishes we tried – and now that I’ve tasted them, no BBQ will be complete for me without them!
With plenty of time left for BBQs this summer (British weather-dependent!), I’ll definitely be making the most of M&S’s Grill range; the 3-for-£10 deal matches the current BBQ offer at Tesco, but M&S’s range is more varied and, in my opinion, of a higher quality.
These products were provided to me complimentary by M&S; however, I was not obliged to write a positive review.
