Cardiff gets a salt beef sandwich shop! Lunchtime review: City Salt Beef – Charles Street, Cardiff

City Salt Beef on Charles Street, Cardiff

Cardiff now has its very own salt beef sandwich shop in the form of City Salt Beef, which opened last week on the former site of Deli a gogo on Charles Street (part of the Coffee a gogo chain, with branches on nearby St Andrew’s Place and in Whitchurch).

City Salt Beef is still owned by Coffee a gogo, but the rebrand focuses on what the shop has become known best for – it’s salt beef and reuben (pastrami, swiss cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing) sandwiches.

I popped along to City Salt Beef last week with my friend, Sarah. Besides salt beef and reuben sandwiches, the menu features four options including smoked salmon, halloumi and hummus, roast turkey and the city club, each of which could be served on either artisan bread or a bagel.

Sarah was very keen to try the salt beef sandwich (£7), so I went for the city club (£5.50). It was a bright, sunny day and so we sat in the outside dining area at the front of the shop (as you can probably tell by how bright my pictures are – oops!)

The salt beef sandwich was packed full of meltingly tender sliced salt beef and gherkins, served with mustard on caraway and rye bread. The salt beef is sourced from London-based cured meats specialist, Hensons and cooked at City Salt Beef. It looked delicious – if I wasn’t so busy tucking into my sandwich, I would’ve asked for a little taste (but I guess that just gives me an excuse to return for lunch on another day!) Sarah really enjoyed her salt beef sandwich and she would happily order it again, although she would ask for slightly less mustard next time.

Meanwhile, the city club sandwich was packed with grilled chicken, crispy bacon, Swiss cheese, fresh tomato and lettuce, served with mayonnaise on toasted white bread. The creamy, sweet taste of the Swiss cheese tasted delicious paired with the chicken and bacon, although the bread seemed a little dry – a little more mayo may have done the trick.

I will most definitely be making a second journey to City Salt Beef. It’s refreshing to have somewhere new to visit when I’m fancying a sandwich and I can’t wait to sample the salt beef for myself, although the halloumi and hummus sounds just as tempting.

We popped into this place a few times before the big menu change over to City Salt Beef – they did some lovely salads and jackets before (same owners and staff) but looking forward to checking out the new menu

I didn’t manage to get there before the rebrand, but Deli a gogo always looked good! Have you been to their branches on St Andrew’s Place or in Whitchurch?

Salt beef also termed as corned beef in North America is absolutely delicious, love rubens. Gherkins and rye bread always work for me, moth watering flavors! Informative review as always.

Thanks Prateek 🙂 It was delicious! I love corned beef too.

There is nothing I love more than salt beef! I’m yet to find anywhere outside of America that makes it as good as my grandmother made it so I feel a trip to Cardiff might be on the cards.

I’ve never tried salt beef in America, but if I happen to visit again, it’ll be on my to-do list!

They look fantastic!! I think my only complaint would be that side salad!! I might have had a little moan about side salads in my blog…ha ha! Sandwich looks well lush though and I would definitely give it a try!x

    • September 1, 2015 / 10:19 pm

I know what you mean Kirsty, sometimes side salads seem a bit pointless and this was one of those times!

  11. September 1, 2015 / 6:04 pm

I absolutely love salt beef especially with gherkins in a bagel x

Really cute sandwich shop! I’m vegetarian so I’m not sure it would appeal to me, but my husband would like it.
