Deliveroo takeaway review – Pt. 2 – Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Cardiff

Earlier this week, I posted a review of Deliveroo’s premium restaurant food delivery service featuring The Hellenic Eatery, an authentic Greek restaurant based in Cathays, Cardiff.

Since writing this review, I have already used the Deliveroo service again to order from the UK-wide burger restaurant chain, Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

Set up in 2001 by three Kiwi guys, Gourmet Burger Kitchen has 60 branches throughout the UK, with two of these in Cardiff – one in the city centre near the new library and one in Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay.

As the restaurant’s name suggests, the main focus of the menu is gourmet burgers. I love the sound of the Persian lamb with pan-fried halloumi, harissa mayo, rocket, pickled onions and garlic and the restaurant’s trademark Kiwiburger, served with beetroot, fried egg, pineapple, mature cheddar, house mayo, relisha and salad.

Most of the burgers cost just over £10, with the exception of some of the Salvador and Buffalo specialty burgers which cost £11.55 and £11.95 respectively, and the classic burgers the cost of which ranges from £7.85 to £9.25.

I ordered from Gourmet Burger Kitchen through Deliveroo on a weekday evening at around 8.40pm and my takeaway was delivered at 9.30pm. I don’t usually have to wait this long when I order from Deliveroo (The Hellenic Eatery only took 25 minutes!) but I didn’t mind because my food was still hot and fresh by the time it got to me.

I had a craving for a traditional, meaty cheeseburger and so I ordered the American cheeseburger (£8.95) from the classics range. It didn’t disappoint. A 6oz handmade beef patty was topped with layered slices of creamy American cheese, a slice of beef tomato, fresh green lettuce and a chunky tomato and onion relish.

It tasted just like a good, American-style burger – something along the lines of Five Guys or Wendy’s. I couldn’t have been happier with my choice of burger and I would definitely order it again.

To accompany my burger, I ordered a portion of chunky skin-on fries (£3.25). A delicious golden brown in colour, these were double-cooked and had a light, crispy skin and a soft, fluffy center. They were somewhat bigger than french fries (more like chips, really), but this wasn’t a bad thing.

When it came to choosing a dip for my fries, I was immediately drawn to the baconnaise (£1.25). I mean, bacon mixed with mayonnaise – what’s not to like? A creamy beige in colour, this sauce contained tiny pieces of crispy bacon and plenty of seasoning. It was the perfect match for the fries, although I wished the portion was bigger as it was very more-ish and £1.25 was fairly expensive for a single dip.

I really enjoyed my takeaway from Gourmet Burger Kitchen and I can definitely see myself tucking into one of their burgers again in future, whether in person at one of their restaurants or via Deliveroo.

I am yet to try these out! I loved your last post but I’m not sure about seeing the food out of the restaurant environment. The baconnaise does sound amazing though!

Thanks Emma, glad you enjoyed reading my post! 🙂 It is a bit strange having restaurant-standard food at home, Carluccio’s Italian restaurant is on there but I haven’t ordered from them yet because I am wary of what their food would be like after being in a takeaway container for the journey to my house! I love their food when I dine in at their restaurant, so I wouldn’t want to ruin my opinion of them.

  2. Nothing beats a good old takeaway! I love that there is so much choice these days. Jealous of your GBK order – their burgers are delish. Do they still do that amazing satay one? x

Yes, I’m pretty sure I saw that one in their ‘Specialities’ range. I’m definitely having the Persian lamb next time 🙂

GBK have some of the best burgers in town! I recently used Deliveroo to order from Maxwell’s in Oxford and it was AWFUL. Will never be ordering from them again as I was very disappointed 🙁 Usually stuff on Deliveroo is excellent!

Aww that’s a shame, what sort of food do they do at Maxwell’s? I’ve been to Oxford once… there was a really good bagel place there!

What a great service this sounds and it is nice to see the food looking as good when it arrives as it does in the restaurant x

Definitely. It makes all the difference to know your getting good quality food in return for your money!

Oh yum I am loving the look of this! It looks like food you would get in restaurant rather than a takeaway! Delicious. x

Wow this does not look like takeaway food! It looks divine and a great meal for a meat eater!

    • December 23, 2015 / 3:25 pm

Definitely. I really enjoyed this food, it was definitely of restaurant quality. Not like your average takeaways!
