Last week, I posted a recipe for sugar-free banana cake made using Indigo Herbs Organic Raw Agave Syrup. If you’re not sure what agave syrup is, then you can find out more about this natural alternative to sugar in my earlier post.

As promised (although slightly later than planned – sorry about that!) I’m now posting my recipe for healthy granola bars, as well as an opportunity to win a 250ml bottle of agave syrup for yourself. You could use it to make the banana cake or the granola bars, or whatever takes your fancy. If baking isn’t your thing, drizzle the agave syrup over porridge or natural yoghurt for breakfast, add it to cocktails in place of sugar or pour it over pancakes.

My recipe for healthy granola bars was inspired by one of my guilty pleasures, Starbuck’s Granola Bars, which I used to think were a wise breakfast choice – until I discovered they contain almost 400 calories! Luckily, my granola bars only contain around 150 calories per portion, so you can feel good about eating them! The giveaway can be found directly below the recipe. Good luck!

Healthy Granola Bars

My granola bars are packed with seeds, raisins and cherries and as they're made using agave syrup, they don't contain any refined sugar. They're great for breakfast on the go, too!

Total Time 30 minutes
Servings 10

Ingredients

  • 150 g low-fat spread
  • 4 heaped tbsp heaped tbsp agave syrup
  • 50 g chopped toasted hazelnut
  • 1 tbsp sunflower seeds
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp flax seed a.k.a. linseed
  • 120 g raisins
  • 60 g glace cherries
  • 150 g porridge oats

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 190C//gas 5 (170C for fan ovens). Grease and line a square or rectangular tin.
  2. Put the low-fat spread and agave syrup into a medium-sized sauce pan and allow the spread to melt over a low heat, stirring continously.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients and stir until thoroughly combined.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the tin and level it out (a spatula is very handy for this!)
  5. Place onto the top shelf of the oven and bake for 20 mins, until golden brown.
  6. Allow to cool, then carefully remove from the baking parchment and tin and slice into 12 squares.

Recipe Notes

Try experimenting with different dried fruits and seeds - use whatever takes your fancy!

Store your healthy granola bars in an airtight container and they'll stay fresh and tasty for up to a week!

      I was like that before I tried this recipe, but now that I have all of the seeds, dried fruit etc in my cupboard, and the syrup, it would be silly not to make my own. They keep for a good week or so in an airtight container πŸ™‚

    I have so many recipes that use agave syrup – Its a brilliant sugar substitute. Starbucks calorie count is outrageous! 400!

      I know, I was so shocked when I actually checked how many calories were in them. They seem a lot healthier than my usual breakfast options, but they definitely aren’t.

    i can’t believe I’ve never thought of adding agave to make a granola bar! I haven’t made them in ages because I thought the sugar content is honey was just too high but I’ve got loads of agave at home! Thanks πŸ™‚

    This looks so delicious. I miss granola bars, unfortunately I can’t have any types of sugar or sweeteners for health reasons. It’s the one thing I really crave as a snack.
