Imagine how amazing it would be to have hand-picked Provençal food delivered all the way from independent shops and farms in Provence, south-eastern France, directly to your doorstep. Recently, I was lucky enough to experience exactly that when Tariette kindly sent me a luxury hamper brimming with fine French produce.
Tariette is a new UK grocer specialising in Provençal food sourced directly from quality independent producers in Haute-Provence. It was founded last year by Sylvie Jacquel and her two sons, Thomas and Pierre, all of whom were born and raised in Haute-Provence, where Sylvie and Pierre still reside to this day.
The idea for Tariette came about when Thomas moved to London around ten years ago and, after becoming somewhat homesick at the lack of Provençal food, asked Sylvie to begin delivering packages to him containing his favourite home comfort foods. Soon, Sylvie began to realise that Thomas wasn’t the only person in the UK who was missing out on all the amazing cuisine that Haute-Provence has to offer, and the concept behind Tariette was born.
The range of products has been inspired by Sylvie’s father, who was the designated chef at family dinners for over 60 years. Rather than focusing on pretty packaging, fancy brand names or over-use of marketing around organic produce, Tariette prioritises traditional and simple, yet delicious produce. Think chocolates, olive oils, almonds, lavender flowers, goats’ cheese and black truffles sourced from producers who are not only known for their quality produce, but for their honest and ethical approaches to business.
Perfectly presented Provençal food
I knew I was in for a treat when my postman asked me what I’d ordered, pointing out that the Tariette-branded box meant there was bound to be something rather extravagant inside!
He wasn’t kidding. My hamper from Tariette was beautifully presented in a wicker basket tied up with a wide cream ribbon with a small label bearing the Tariette logo tied to the handle in brown string. Inside, a layer of neatly folded, crisp grey tissue paper was sealed with a circular Tariette sticker.
Carefully removing the sticker and unwrapping the tissue paper, I found a selection of the finest French foods from Provence waiting for me inside on a bed of shredded raffia. As I opened the hamper, a bundle of fresh lavender pillows nestled inside filled the air with a floral aroma.
Inside my Tariette hamper
Inside my hamper, I found a tantalising selection of chocolate-dusted hazelnuts and almonds (100g each), roasted almond pralines (100g), chocolate olives de Provence (roasted almonds covered in dark and white chocolate, 100g), Calissons with Provence almonds (115g), onion chutney infused with berries, wines and spices (100g), organic rasperry coulis (220g), whole almonds (350g), basil oil (250ml), white nougat with almonds (250g) and lavender honey (250g).
The chocolate-dusted hazelnuts and almonds, nougat and roasted almond pralines were perfect for snacking on, while I loved the concept of the chocolate Olives de Provence. With such an abundance of authentic Provençal food to get my teeth into, I couldn’t resist the temptation to get creative with the products and experiment to see what wonderful dishes I could concoct.
After Googling recipes for baked brie, I came across this incredible recipe for baked brie in puff pastry with honey and almonds.
In creating this dish, I used Tariette’s lavender honey and whole almonds, alongside Curds and Croust’s Cornish Truffle Brie (another product I was kindly sent last week for taste-testing!). I think you’ll agree that the finished result looks and tastes just as amazing as it sounds, and it was deceptively quick and easy to prepare too!
Turning my attention to Tariette’s basil-flavoured extra virgin olive oil, I sliced up a couple of fresh tomatoes with mozzarella and fresh basil leaves and drizzled over some balsamic vinegar, before adding the finishing touch in the form of a small glug of basil oil.
Tariette’s products and hampers are currently available to buy online and from selected markets in the UK, mainly in and around London, as well as several larger events including Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July.
