Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Pink Afternoon Tea at Park Plaza Hotel, Cardiff

Did you know that almost 60,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK? That’s the equivalent of one person every 10 minutes. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, affecting 1 in 8 women in the UK.

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Laguna Kitchen and Bar at Park Plaza Hotel, Cardiff have given their afternoon tea a pink makeover. The Pink Champagne Afternoon Tea is available throughout this month, and Park Plaza are donating 10% of sales to Breast Cancer Care Cymru.

Laguna is definitely one of my favourite restaurants in Cardiff city centre. Based on the ground floor of Park Plaza Hotel on Greyfriars Road, the open-plan restaurant offers a sophisticated, classy dining environment quite unlike anything you’d expect from a typical hotel dining room.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Pink Champagne Afternoon Tea at Park Plaza Hotel Cardiff

The Pink Champagne afternoon tea is a pretty arrangement of pink pastries, assorted finger sandwiches, Welsh cakes and traditional scones with fresh clotted cream and jam, served with a glass of champagne and your choice of teas (£24.95 per person).

To begin, we each sipped on a glass of chilled Mercier champagne.

Served on pillow-soft bread, the finger sandwiches had four different fillings including cucumber with dill crème fraîche, free-range egg with chive mayo, Severn and Wye smoked salmon with cream cheese, and honey roast ham. My favourite was the salmon; incredibly fresh and tender, its intense, smoky flavour paired beautifully with the cream cheese. The egg and chive mayo came a very close second, however.

After polishing off the sandwiches, we took a short break to enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Earl Grey and white peach tea, before moving on to the Welsh cakes and the scones.

Sprinkled with sugar, the Welsh cakes had a slightly crisp coating and I could definitely detect a hint of cinnamon, while the freshly baked sultana scones were accompanied by a trio of butter, Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Finally (and with just enough room left to spare), we moved on to the top tier; an indulgent assortment consisting of a strawberry cup cake topped with buttercream, pink sugar hearts and edible glitter, French macaroons, champagne and strawberry jelly with Chantilly cream, and strawberry mille-feuille. I was particularly drawn to the macaroons, which were perfectly formed and filled with sweet strawberry jam. Personally, I found the strawberry jelly with cream a little sickly, but that probably wasn’t  helped by the amount of food I’d eaten.

We loved the Pink Champagne Afternoon Tea at Park Plaza Hotel Cardiff. As always, the service in Laguna Kitchen and Bar was attentive and friendly, and we were very impressed by both the food and the drink.
