Cosy Club Cardiff’s Major-General burger shortlisted in National Burger Awards

Recently, I was invited to Cosy Club Cardiff to try out their new burger, the Major-General, currently shortlisted as one of the UK’s top 16 burgers in the National Burger Awards.

Cosy Club Cardiff

Owned by Loungers, Cosy Club restaurant and bar is a sister venue of Cardiff’s famous string of ‘Lounges’, consisting of Juno Lounge on Wellfield Road, Ocho Lounge in Penarth, and Fino Lounge in Whitchurch. The group also own a number of Cosy Clubs and Lounges elsewhere throughout both Wales and England.

Like its fellow Lounges, Cosy Club’s décor exudes glamour and class with velvet fringed lampshades hanging down from the ceiling, casting a warm, fuzzy glow over the restaurant, vintage leather sofas sitting in the bar area, and oil paintings hanging on the walls.

As our bubbly waitress informed us, Cosy Club undergoes four menu changes each year, two of which involve a big transformation, and two of which simply see some slight tweaks being made to certain dishes.

The Major-General burger (£13.95) has been on Cosy Club’s menu for some time now already, but the recipe was recently amended, and the new burger is completely exclusive to Cosy Club and not available at any of its sister venues.

Wedged between a golden brown brioche bun, you’ll find a 6oz 100% beef patty, crispy bacon rashers, macaroni cheese fritter, melted mature cheddar, large gherkin, fresh rocket, red onions and tomato.

This was the kind of burger that leaves you feeling both worried and excited when you first catch a glimpse of it; you can’t wait to dig in, but have no idea where to start and doubt you’ll be able to finish it all.

Eventually, we just picked our burgers up, squashed them down as much as possible, and took a great big bite. The macaroni cheese fritter worked surprisingly well, the tangy cheese and crispy coating complimenting the thick meaty patty beautifully. The rocket was another great addition, which gave the burger a peppery kick.

Meanwhile, a pile of sweet potato fries had a crunchy exterior and soft, smooth centre, while a homemade slaw of red cabbage and carrot in a light, creamy dressing brought zesty flavour and moisture to the dish.

The burger was so filling, I only managed to eat half of it before I admitted defeat. My guest managed to polish off the whole lot; her tip is to just keep eating – don’t take a break, even for a minute. Admittedly, she was feeling extremely lethargic by the time we left Cosy Club, and I’m sure she probably fell into a food coma by the time she got home.

We enjoyed sampling Cosy Club’s new Major-General burger. Cardiff certainly isn’t short of burger bars, including those offering super-sized meals like this one, but I’ve never had a macaroni cheese fritter in a burger before, and it really won me over.

On 22nd February, find out whether Cosy Club’s Major-General Burger will take the crown of the UK’s no.1 burger, when all will be revealed in the National Burger Awards!

Gherkins seem like a love-hate thing for most people 🙂
