Eat Out on a Budget in Jamaica – Restaurant Review: Mango Tree Restaurant, Negril

Mango Tree Restaurant is a small, family-run restaurant serving low cost food, sitting juxtaposed opposite Rick’s Cafe, one of the world’s top 10 bars (according to the Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine).

The menu doesn’t offer too much choice in terms of dishes, and some days they only serve some of the dishes listed above.

Inside, there’s a small bar and seating space is limited to just a few wooden bar stools. However, this is the place to go for authentic Jamaican food at less than $10 for two people.

When I visited the Mango Tree Restaurant I ordered fried chicken with rice and peas, served with a side salad of shredded lettuce, carrot, tomato and cucumber. You can choose between small, medium and large portion sizes – I chose medium.

The fried chicken was a bit of a let down. Whereas other restaurants serve fried chicken in portions, the Mango Tree Restaurant cut it into chunks, leaving it on the bone. It was more difficult to eat like this because I had to keep picking out the bones.

The rice and peas weren’t great either. They lacked flavour in comparison to those I tried elsewhere in Jamaica, and the rice was slightly overcooked.

My guest ordered a large portion of jerk pork with rice and peas, which was served with a vegetable pasta salad. He really enjoyed his meal and often visits the Mango Tree Restaurant for food, so perhaps I’m just being too fussy… but it just wasn’t for me!

Still, though, this place is so cheap that it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and fancy some traditional Jamaican food. It’ll save you a lot of money compared to dining at Rick’s Cafe!
