Restaurant review: Meat at 156 – City Road, Cardiff

When I heard there was a new burger bar opening on Cardiff ’s City Road called Meat at 156 back in March, I wasn’t particularly bothered or excited. I’ve lost count of the number of burger bars which have opened up in Cardiff over the past couple of years or so, and City Road is the last place you’d expect to find a decent burger, so my expectations weren’t all that high.

On a recent visit to Meat at 156, however, I discovered that there is another aspect to this burger bar that sets it apart from others of its kind. As owner, Fahad Hassan explained, the concept behind Meat at 156 developed when Fahad and his two friends, Adam and Fasih, noticed a gap in the Cardiff food and drink scene for a gourmet burger bar serving affordable yet tasty, Halal-certified food. The meat used by Meat at 156 is sourced from a local abattoir specialising in quality Halal meat. All of the burgers are made with fresh – never frozen – meat which is handmade into patties, enabling Meat at 156 to ensure a quality product right through from start to finish.

You can’t order a beer with your burger here, as Meat at 156 doesn’t serve alcohol. However, the drinks menu compensates for this with a tempting variety of soft drinks and milkshakes and, after tasting one of these milkshakes, I can’t imagine visiting Meat at 156 and not ordering one with my food.

Both of the milkshakes we ordered were indulgently creamy and velvety. The Hazelnut Crunch (£3.75) tasted of fresh vanilla and hazelnut and was topped with whipped cream and whole hazelnuts, while the Chocolate Peanut Swirl (also £3.75) consisted of an indulgent chocolate and peanut butter shake, interspersed with small chunks of peanut and topped with whipped cream and lashings of chocolate sauce.

The food menu features an array of burgers, from play-it-safe options like the Classic and the Meat at Signature, to bold concoctions like the Volcano and the Amigo. While some burger bars confine you to a choice of beef or chicken dependent on which burger you opt for, all of Meat at 156’s burgers can be ordered with either a 6oz beef, 6oz chicken or vegetarian burger; the flavour combinations are endless. Alongside burgers, Meat at 156 also serves a tempting range of steaks (all aged and of the highest quality), chicken dishes and American-style sides like Cajun onion rings, nachos and chicken tenders.

As we waited for our burgers to arrive, we shared a portion of grilled chicken wings smothered in sticky, smoky BBQ sauce (£2.95). These would have worked equally well as a side dish and they are also available with garlic fusion or peri peri sauce.

The Texan burger took the form of a 6oz beef patty and fresh gem lettuce, sliced tomato, melted cheddar cheese, hickory BBQ sauce and crispy fried onion rings in a toasted brioche bun (£6.95). Burger add-ons are available at an extra cost if required.

To accompany my burger, I ordered the Spicy Dirty Fries (£1.95). A generous serving of French fries was drizzled with a fiery tomato sauce and sprinkled with freshly sliced jalapenos, with a mound of melted Cheddar cheese at the centre. These were seemingly addictive and I polished off the lot by myself in less than ten minutes, but a little more cheese on top would’ve made them taste even nicer. Not for the faint-hearted, these dirty fries had practically set my mouth on fire by the time I’d polished them all off; if you’re not one for spice, go for the BBQ dirty fries instead.

Meanwhile, my guest got his teeth into the Southern Crunch (£6.50); a meaty 6oz beef patty topped with crispy fried jalapeno peppers and onion rings in a light, seasoned batter, finished with a Cajun-style mayo and wedged between another one of those wonderful brioche buns. The burger was paired with a regular serving of fries, presented in a miniature chip-frying basket.

Our burgers were pleasantly satisfying and we didn’t have any room left for dessert afterwards, although it was difficult to resist the sound of the hot chocolate brownies!

We really enjoyed the milkshakes and the food we ate at Meat at 156, and we’ll definitely return again in future. The prices at Meat at 156 are more reasonable than many other burger bars based in Cardiff city centre and the outskirts, and the quality of the meat isn’t compromised by this either. It’s worth a visit here just for one of those sumptuous milkshakes, but I 100% recommend tucking in to your favourite burger and a few sides whilst you’re there, too!

OMG I am literally drooling. I’ve been craving a burger for a few days and that looks yummy. The milkshakes look great! I’m not surprised you didn’t have room for dessert.

This would be completely up my street from the fries to the non alcoholic drinks and I’m not a drinker!

It is a great place to go if you like a good, meaty burger and the fries were lovely. Probably best not to order the spicy ones unless you like your food very fiery!

I’d have to try the veggie burger! And a milkshake..if only I could eat solid food lol!
