|Miller and Carter Cardiff The Hayes|
I was recently very excited to receive an invitation to the launch of the new Miller and Carter restaurant, on The Hayes in Cardiff city centre. Unfortunately, however, I wasn’t able to attend in person and so my former colleague, Sarah, attended on my behalf. After hearing what she had to say about it, I’m even more gutted that I wasn’t able to make it along myself. Here’s what Sarah thought:
We arrived at Miller and Carter at around 6:30pm and we were welcomed into the new restaurant with a glass of bubbly. On first impressions, the restaurant is rather large and spacious, with a big staircase that almost beckons you upstairs. Make sure you check out the downstairs area too, though – it has plenty of seating, a well-equipped bar and an open plan kitchen surrounded by dining booths so that you can watch your meal being prepared.

With the launch night proving to be very popular the restaurant was brimming with guests, so we escaped to the upstairs balcony to find a quieter spot in which to peruse the menu. This gave us a perfect birds-eye view of the kitchen area, where we could see the chefs at work.

Miller and Carter’s menu is clear and concise, with the focus being on steak. All staff at the Cardiff branch have received specialist training to ensure they know how to prepare the perfect steak, and the steak section of the menu includes handy cooking tips to try out at home.
Where drinks are concerned, the cocktail menu is particularly extensive and at £4.95* each every day until 7pm, Miller and Carter would be well worth a visit for after-work drinks.
The food for the evening began with a selection of canapés, and the waiting staff did a great job at keeping the plates flowing. Particularly appealing was the house prawn cocktail, juicy prawns drizzled in thousand island sauce, topped with a homemade nacho and nestled inside a lettuce leaf – the best way I’ve eaten prawn cocktail in a long time!

After the canapés were served we were invited to try some dishes from the menu, including the barbeque chicken wings and spare ribs. These were both well-cooked, the meat sliding off the bone.

I noticed a few plates of mini slider burgers leaving the kitchen downstairs, but to my disappointment none of them made their way upstairs. I asked one of the waitresses if there were any left and she kindly went to the kitchen and returned with several plates of burgers for the upstairs guests. As the launch night was so busy I really felt as though she’d gone the extra mile for me and when I tasted the burgers, I was so glad I’d asked about them – they were amazing!

The staff also circulated with several different cuts of steak including sirloin, rib-eye and chateaubriand, all deliciously succulent and cooked to perfection. One of the highlights of the evening was a butcher demonstration of the different cuts of steak available on the menu. The butcher was very knowledgeable and although the sound system let him down slightly, it was an informative demonstration.

The selection of desserts was fantastic. I had two small, yet rich, chocolate brownies and two slices of lemon roulade. The lemon roulade had a meringue consistency, somewhat of a swiss roll-type affair. It had quite a strong lemon flavour, but this was justified because it was served with sweet berry compote.
All in all I can’t wait to return to Miller and Carter for a meal, and with its fixed price menu offering two courses for under £11**, the restaurant looks set to become a popular dining out option in Cardiff city centre.
