Cheese, please! Cafe review: Munchies – Crwys Road, Cardiff

Cheese lovers rejoice! A new café has opened on Crwys Road, Cardiff, serving grilled cheese sandwiches and baked treats.

Munchies officially opened on Monday following a soft launch to press, bloggers, friends and family last week. However, it actually started out as a late-night sweet treat delivery service sweet running out of university student, Jordan Wentzel’s house on Richmond Road, Cathays. Jordan would bake decadent goodies and deliver them throughout Cardiff. Since graduating from university, Jordan managed to save up some cash to take his business to the next level by opening a café dedicated to feeding Cardiff’s cheeseaholics.

Inside, close-up photos of melted cheese sandwiches hang on the clean white walls, while cheese graters and Nutella jars double up as lampshades. A drool-inducing display of  brownies, blondies, cookies and muffins are showcased in a glass cabinet, and the sweet, buttery aroma that hit me as soon as I walked in confirms that they are freshly baked.

Aptly titled ‘Muncheese’, the grilled cheese sandwich menu boasts both play-it-safe classic options like the Plain Jane (three cheese mix with any toppings) and the Classic (cheese, ham and tomato), alongside more creative concoctions like Brie Little Pigs (bacon weave and brie) and Return of the Mac (three cheese mix with mac n’cheese). All sandwiches are priced at £4.50 – £6.50.

If you don’t fancy a cheese toastie, get stuck into the Camem-sharer (£10); a bread bowl filled with Camembert, with garlic and herb bread for dipping (I think I just died and went to heaven), the Caerphilly cheese steak (£8), or the mac and cheese (£5).

Feeling particularly piggish, I ordered the Chippy Lane (£5.50) grilled cheese sandwich. Pork sausage, rustic homemade chips and baked beans sat wedged between two doorstop slices of soft white bread, toasted until golden brown and oozing with hot, melted three cheese mix. I was apprehensive about whether the beans, bread and chips combo would work or whether it would be carb overload, but the sandwich contained just the right amount of chips and beans to fill me up, without sending me into a food coma. The ready salted crisps on the side were a nice finishing touch; although realistically, they weren’t really needed.

After indulging in cheese and carbs, I saw no point holding back – it would be rude not to sample some of Jordan’s baking, after all.  I ordered  a salted caramel and white chocolate blondie (£2); a generous slab of moist, buttery goodness dotted with gooey white chocolate chunks, and drizzled with salted caramel sauce, served in a baking tray.

Besides blondies, the Munchies menu also features brownies, cookies, muffins and brioche sandwiches and, in a nod to Jordan’s South African heritage, Koeksisters – a South African fried doughnut glazed in vanilla syrup. All of the baked goods are very reasonably priced, from £1.50 to £3, except for the Kilo Cooking Challenge (£15) – unless you eat it in the fastest time, in which case it’s free!

If you’re feeling thirsty after all that cheese, sip on a Cardiff Coffee, try some Sex Down the Bay, or just keep it simple with a spirit, beer or glass of wine. I slurped on a luminous green South African Sparletta creme soda (£2).

I like Munchies. It’s not somewhere I’d go often because the food is fairly indulgent, but if you’re craving comfort food and you fancy treating yourself, it’s the place to be. Check it out any time from Tuesday to Thursday from 10.30am – 6.30pm, Fridays from 10.30am – 11am, Saturdays from 10am – 11am and Sundays from 10am – 10pm.

I was invited to Munchies Cardiff as a guest and my food and drink was provided complimentary; however, I was not obliged to write a positive review.

It’s really quirky here; I liked the titles of the cheese sandwiches, especially the Chippy Lane one.

Oh man, that sandwich (blondie?) looks so good! I loved toasties, and that one looks delicious!

    • August 4, 2017 / 11:47 am

The blondie is the dessert – it’s a brownie without cocoa powder I believe. The toastie was awesome!

I am a huge cheese lover so this sounds amazing, I’ll definitely add this to my to visit list next time I’m in Cardiff x

    • August 4, 2017 / 11:46 am

      I know – sheer indulgence! 😀

    • August 4, 2017 / 11:15 am

I think it’s a good idea too. Costs will be fairly low in terms of producing the food, allowing the restaurant to make a good profit. At the same time, it’s a quirky idea that hasn’t really been experimented with much yet in Cardiff (aside for a pop-up called Mr. Croquewich – which is actually out of this world!)

I have put on several stone since I began food blogging 🙁 The only downside to it. I really need to start focusing on healthier food.

Oh definitely – I love a spot of indulgence! 🙂

  14. August 7, 2017 / 12:03 am

I’d have to go for the Return of the Mac, I’m a big Mac N Cheese fan. Sounds like a great place to eat and what bargain prices

    • August 8, 2017 / 6:37 pm

I was keen to try that, but it wasn’t available on the launch evening. Next time, for sure! 🙂
