Recipe – Heart-shaped Welsh cakes

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. For Valentines Day this year, I treated my boyfriend to something different by baking him some heart-shaped Welsh cakes.

I prepared the dough following a traditional recipe from BBC Good Food which can be found here, using a simple heart-shaped cutter to create a romantic effect. I cooked the Welsh cakes on an old-fashioned, cast iron griddle, sprinkling them with caster sugar once they were cooked.

They were delicious, and tasted especially nice whilst still warm. I’ve made Welsh cakes before and my last ones were a bit better than this, as these ones were slightly burnt in places. I turned them regularly to try and avoid this, but next time I will try making them thicker and turning the heat down a notch. Anyway, judging by the time it takes my boyfriend to clear a plateful of them, crumbs and all, I think it’s safe to say he likes them.
If I made these again for a romantic occasion, I would try stirring cherries or cranberries into the dough instead of currants. Chocolate chips could also make for a pleasant addition.
Tempted to try out the recipe for yourself? St David’s Day, on March 1st, is the ideal time to tuck into a tasty Welsh cake, so get cooking!

These look great! Don't know why I've never seen differently shaped welsh cakes before. Are you on Pinterest/Twitter etc? I also blog about food and live in Cardiff!

Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚ I now have my eye on a cutter shaped like the Welsh dragon! I realised after making these that I could have used cranberries or cherries to give them a red tint.

I'm not on Pinterest but I am on Twitter @BusyBee1989 and due to be setting up a Facebook account for my blog soon. What's your blog called?

I have never tried Welsh cakes before but yours look delicious! Is there a particular tradition behind them in Welsh food lore? x

    • January 23, 2016 / 11:21 pm

I’m not sure, but I know they go back years in Welsh food history. They are traditionally made on a griddle over a stove.

I hate currants, so you’re idea of substituting them for chocolate chips makes me extraordinarily happy hahah. I’ve always wanted to try welsh cakes but have avoided them because of the currant issue- until now! x

Ooh wow, you should definitely give them a go with chocolate chips. You could use white and milk chocolate to mix it up a bit.
