Last month, I wrote a blog post about Cardiff’s up and coming street food scene and DEPOT Cardiff, a popular pop-up venue offering fresh food from independent restaurants and producers, accompanied by live DJs, cocktails and craft beer.
While the DEPOT is closed until next month, Cardiff’s street food scene is still very much thriving at Street Food Circus, a ‘pop-up street food night market’ set up at the Old Stable Yard, John Street (just behind John Lewis).
Street Food Circus offers a fun, festival-like atmosphere for both dining and drinking. The venue features street food pop-up stalls/trucks, a big-top circus beer tent, brightly-coloured umbrellas, cocktail bars and music.
Since the beginning of May, Street Food Circus has been running every Friday and Saturday from 5-11pm and every Sunday from 2-10pm.
With over 15 rotating pop-ups including Hangfire Smoke House, Hokkei, Patagonia, Purple Poppadom, Meat and Greek and Dirty Fried Chicken (DFC), there is something to suit all tastes.

Earlier this month, Street Food Circus hosted the Wales and the West heats of the British Street Food Awards. 13 of Britain’s best street food traders each cooked up a storm in a bid to tempt diners into voting for them. Entry cost £5, including a free pint of craft beer.
I’ve managed to get to Street Food Circus on two occasions, and I definitely intend to make that three before the Circus leaves town this weekend!
However, there is room for improvement. The yard that houses Street Food Circus is covered in stones and rubble, which can be quite uncomfortable to walk over.
In addition, the food and drink is generally quite expensive. At the heats of the British Street Food Awards, I was delighted to discover that most pop-ups were offering taster dishes for £3, as opposed to the typical main meal price of around £5-8. I haven’t been to Street Food Circus since, so I’m not sure if it’s become a regular thing or whether it was just a one-off, but it was a great idea! We preferring sample a range of smaller dishes from several different traders, to paying over the odds for a single main meal.
Here are my highlights from Street Food Circus:
The Chuck’s Cali with Cheese burger (£8); a rich, meaty burger covered in a layer of American cheese, sitting on crisp lettuce, tomato and red onions wedged between a freshly toasted sesame seed bun.
Garlic chips with cheddar cheese, parmesan, chives and truffle oil (£5), also from Chuck’s. We shared these, but they were so delicious, I could quite happily eat a whole tray to myself!
Blood on the Dancefloor – a creamed spinach, goat’s cheese and beetroot puree toasted cheese sandwich from Mr Croquewich (£5.50).
Seafood chowder from Cafe Mor.; a comforting combination of bacon, salmon, smoked haddock and coley mixed with sweetcorn and leeks, topped with laverbread and served with a Ship’s biscuit (£3; taster dish)
And last but not least, slow-cooked lamb shoulder flavoured with aromatic herbs and spices, sitting on a bed of cous cous (£3; taster dish), from The Cauldron.
