A Welsh baker has won third place for his buns in the Western Bakery Championships which took place in Devon on Sunday 14th October.
Sean Morgan, a trainee baker at the Golden Crust bakery in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, has been awarded third place in the trainee class for bun goods for his Swiss buns and currant teacakes.

Hosted by bakery supplier Bako Western, the annual competition is now the largest of its kind in the UK and offers free entry, hog roast, live demonstrations, a prize draw and face painting for children amongst other attractions. This year saw a record of seven-hundred-and-fifty entries in fifty classes spanning the complete range of bakery products.
Sean joined the Golden Crust bakery as a trainee six months ago after being made redundant from his former position as a sales assistant in a DIY store. When asked why he is drawn to baking, Sean says, “The liberty of creation, the continuity of learning and the freedom which is only found in a job which requires artistic natures.
“Baking has captivated me and thus made me interested in all forms of culinary work. I take a lot of the things that I learn in the bakery home and pursue similar or varied recipes in my own time. With more experience I am hoping to find the time to do a course in catering, potentially as a pastry chef.”
Located reasonably close to the border of Wales, the bakery produces several Welsh products including Welsh cakes. Sean is keen to expand the range of Welsh produce on sale in the bakery, as he reveals, “I recently introduced my boss to corned beef rissoles which we hope may become a regular product.”
The Golden Crust bakery entered fourteen different categories in the championships, winning first prize for both their commercial chocolate celebration cake and their American muffins. Much to their delight the bakery also came second for their Royal Iced celebration cake and third for their assorted jap fancies, whilst their rich fruit cake was highly commended.
The show was well attended by individual bakers from Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester. Sean attended the show along with bakery owners Lorraine and Richard Pearce and fellow trainee Frankie Wood, all of whom were very impressed by the scale of the event.
