Discover some of the most important travel insurance benefits and take a look at what to consider before buying a travel insurance policy.
Who doesn’t love travelling? Every yefar, millions of people from the UK head off on holidays to both short-haul and far-flung destinations.
When you visit a new and unfamiliar country, however, you might face a number of unexpected and – unfortunately – often unpleasant, situations. If you don’t anticipate these problems and take advance precautions, it could ruin your holiday.
Whether you’re off on a short city break in Europe or jetting to a long-haul destination for a few weeks, you’ll need travel insurance in place before you go. Compare quotes from a provider like AA Travel Insurance, ensuring you look for a policy that offers all the travel insurance benefits you’ll need, both before and during your trip.

5 reasons to buy travel insurance
Loss of items
Imagine arriving in a new destination, only to discover that you’ve lost your passport or your luggage has been mislaid. If you have travel insurance in place, you’ll be entitled to immediate assistance. Usually, your insurer will cover the cost of a duplicate passport.
Meanwhile, if you’ve lost your baggage, your insurer will reimburse the cost of the contents up to the maximum amount specified on your insurance policy. It’s always a good idea to pack a clean outfit, underwear and any necessary essentials into your cabin bag, just in case your suitcase gets lost in transit.
Cover health problems
This is perhaps the most important of all potential travel insurance benefits. Although it’s not pleasant to think about it, there’s a chance you might become unwell or get injured while on holiday.
In the event that you need medical treatment, your travel insurance will usually cover the cost of emergency care and treatment up to an amount specified on your policy. Some policies also include cashless hospitalisation, whereby you don’t actually need to produce cash up-front as your insurer will foot the medical bills (up to a certain cost) for you.
This is even more important to consider in the wake of the coronavirus epidemic. For guidance on what to look for when purchasing insurance to cover you while travelling during the outbreak, check out this handy guide to travel insurance and coronavirus.
Emergency medical transportation or repatriation
In addition to covering the cost of medical treatment, your travel insurance policy should ideally also include cover for emergency medical transportation and repatriation. This means you could travel in an ambulance to the hospital at the cost of your insurer and, in some cases, your policy will also assist you in travelling back to your home country if there is a requirement to do so in order to undergo treatment.

Coverage against flight cancellation or delay
Travel insurance can come in handy before you’ve even arrived at your dream destination. If your flight was to be cancelled or delayed, having a travel insurance policy in place usually means that your insurer will reimburse you for the flight tickets and any accommodation fees.
When you’re taking out your policy, check to ensure that you’ve got cover for this. There would be nothing worse than turning up to the airport to find out that, not only has your holiday been cancelled, but you’ve lost all the money you forked out for it too.
Reimbursement of fraudulent charges
It’s every holiday-makers worst nightmare. You reach into your bag or your pocket to find your purse or wallet, only to discover that it’s missing. If you happen to lose your credit or debit card while travelling and you spot a few unfamiliar transactions on your statement, try not to panic.
Travel insurance policies will often reimburse you for fraudulent transactions made using your card, up to a certain amount as specified on your policy.

What travel insurance benefits should you look for when buying a new policy?
- Think about the travel insurance benefits you’ll need for the country you’re visiting and consider choosing a country-specific travel insurance. For long-term travel, for example, you might wish to take out travel medical insurance with additional healthcare benefits.
- Over 65? Consider taking out a travel insurance policy aimed at mature travellers
- If you’re a frequent traveller, buying an annual travel insurance policy might help you to save money on the premium.
- Don’t just go for the cheapest policy you can find. Look into the fine details in the policy terms, conditions and exclusions. Make sure you find the right policy for your needs.
While finding the best travel insurance policy for you can take some time, it’ll be worth it when you can relax and forget your worries while on holiday, safe in the knowledge that you’re prepared for all scenarios.
