10 barbecue party ideas to try out this summer

Themed BBQ night

Spice up your BBQ party by setting an exciting theme. Whether it’s Hawaiian Luau, Wild West, or Tropical Tiki, a creative theme adds an extra layer of excitement. Decorate accordingly, create themed cocktails and foods, splash out on some themed furniture covers, and encourage your guests to dress the part.

Whether you prepare Middle Eastern shawarma kebabs, Jamaican-style jerk chicken, American hot dogs, or another international barbecue favourite, cooking foods that align with your chosen theme will help to reinforce your chosen vibe.

Aim to include a variety of meat, poultry, fish and veggie dishes for guests to choose from. For a fish dish that’s bound to impress, try my cod and Spanish chorizo rosemary skewers.

DIY burger bar

Set up a DIY burger bar where guests can build their own burgers. Not only will this help to get involved with preparing the food and have a bit of fun, but it’ll also mean you’ll get to take a break. Lay out a selection of buns, meats (beef, chicken, veggie patties), and toppings like cheese, bacon, onions, tomato and sauces, and let your guests help themselves.

Check out some of my favourite burger recipes for inspiration, like these peri peri chicken burgers with avocado and lime mayo (pictured below) or my nacho burger with guacamole.

Street food catering

Fancy taking a break from traditional BBQ fare altogether, or perhaps simply giving yourself a night off cooking so you can socialise with your guests? Hiring a street food caterer can be a fun alternative to throwing your own barbecue, especially if you’ve got lots of mouths to feed. Mexican street food catering is a fantastic option. With vibrant and varied dishes like tacos, quesadillas, and churros, there’s bound to be something all your guests will enjoy tucking into.

Pizza party

Similar to the concept of the DIY burger bar, a pizza party gives your guests the opportunity to create their own pizza.

Give everyone a ball of pizza dough and let them roll out their base, providing a selection of toppings to choose from. Pop the pizzas on a pizza stone on your barbecue grill or fire up the pizza oven, if you’re lucky enough to have one!

Games and activities

Keep the party lively by planning garden games and activities to entertain your guests. Charades, Twister, and giant Jenga boards are all great BBQ party ideas. For the kids, consider a scavenger hunt or a bubble station.

Live music or DJ

Create the perfect summer vibe with live music, or even a DJ. If you have any friends who are in a local band, you could invite them to play a set, or compile a summer playlist to keep the tunes flowing all night. You could also invite your guests to connect their own playlists to your speakers, to switch up the musical atmosphere throughout the evening!

Signature cocktails and mocktails

Elevate your BBQ with a signature cocktail or mocktail bar. Create a few house specialties using fresh fruits and herbs. Think mojitos, margaritas, or a refreshing cucumber lemonade. Provide a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options to cater to all guests. For an added touch of sophistication, incorporate smoked cocktails using Aged & Charred cocktail smokers to infuse rich, smoky flavours. This simple yet impressive detail will take your drinks to the next level, making them a memorable part of your BBQ experience.

Consider dietary needs and healthy BBQ options

Remember to ask your guests about any dietary needs or food allergies so you can ensure they’ll be well catered for. You should also provide a few healthy alternatives for the health-conscious. Grilled vegetables, lean meats, and fish are great options, while fresh salads, quinoa, and whole grain buns usually go down well too.

Grilled desserts

Once you’ve finished your barbecue, wow your guests with a decadent grilled dessert. Grilled pineapple, peaches, and bananas are delicious and can all be served with ice cream or whipped cream for a quick, easy and indulgent BBQ dessert option.

S’mores station

Add a bit of camping magic to your BBQ party with a s’mores station. Set up a small fire pit or use your grill to roast marshmallows. Provide graham crackers, chocolate bars, and marshmallows for guests to assemble their s’mores. It’s a sweet way to end the evening!

Forget frozen burger patties, and processed sausages. Hosting a BBQ party in your garden this summer doesn’t have to be a mundane affair. With these BBQ party ideas, you can take your next summer barbecue to the next level. Whether you’ll be grilling up global flavours, setting up a s’mores station, or hiring a street food caterer, hopefully you’ll now be feeling inspired to start planning a garden BBQ that’ll leave your guests talking long beyond this summer.
