With Christmas just six weeks away, I’m already worried about my waistline. Last year (and every other year for the past 5-6 years!) one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to lose weight. However, rather than stick to my goal, I’ve actually put on even more weight this year (the things I do in the name of food blogging!) and now the indulgent festive period is almost upon us, I could give Santa a run for his money with the size I’m going to be come Boxing Day, if I don’t make an effort to eat some healthy festive snacks this Christmas!
Scouring through Pinterest, I was genuinely surprised at the variety of calorie-light Christmas nibbles that looked just as appealing as the Cadbury’s Roses, KP Cheese Footballs and hot mince pies I find myself gobbling up every year.
Here are some of the best healthy festive snacks I came across:
1) Chocolate crispy Christmas puds
Brought to you by Slimming World fanatics, Kay and Kate from Pinch of Nom, these chocolate crispy Christmas puds are a complete transformation of the ultimate Christmas dinner dessert.
Simply mix melted mini Mars bars with a little butter, stir it into Coco Pops and form the mixture into small balls, top with melted white chocolate and garnish with silver balls and herb leaves, or any edible Christmas decorations you like.
2) Chocolate-dipped candied oranges
Swap your usual Terry’s Chocolate Orange for a lighter alternative in the form of these chocolate-dipped candied oranges from award-winning Irish food presenter and TV personality, Donal Skehan.
Boil water and sugar in a big frying pan, then reduce the heat slightly, add sliced blood oranges in a single layer and simmer for 40 minutes. Transfer them to a wire rack to cool for a few hours or overnight, then bake in the oven on a low heat for a few hours to crisp them up. For the finishing touch, dip the orange slices into melted chocolate and sprinkle with sea salt.
3) Baked honey pears with rosemary and pine nuts
These honey-drizzled pears are baked with rosemary, lemon juice and zest, and a touch of butter, before finishing with a dollop of Greek yoghurt and a scattering of pine nuts.
Well done Waitrose!
4) Cinnamon apple chips
For a quick and easy healthy festive snack, try out these cinnamon apple chips from the Trial and Eater blog.
Thinly slice some apples and bake them in the oven for an hour each side, before dusting with cinnamon. If you want them to be a little sweeter, sprinkle them with sugar too.
5) Strawberry Santas
Almost too adorable to eat, these strawberry Santas from the Smart School House blog will be the centre of attention on your Christmas buffet table.
So, with a bit of luck, if I swap my pigs in blankets and fruit cake for some of these tasty alternatives, perhaps I may even lose weight this Christmas instead of putting it on!
