Christmas morning tends to unfold at its own pace. Whether you wake up early to open presents or prefer easing into the day with a quiet hour to yourself, a relaxed breakfast sets the tone. It doesn’t need to be elaborate; a handful of comforting dishes can make the morning feel special, without keeping you tied to the kitchen.

In my house, we tend to lounge around in our cosy Christmas pyjamas until at least noon, enjoying a lazy Christmas Day morning fuelled by copious cups of coffee (or Bucks Fizz!), chocolate and Christmas TV. My brushed cotton tartan pyjamas from British Boxers are a real saviour on cold winter mornings; they’re not cheap, but the quality is outstanding and they’re the snuggliest pyjamas I’ve ever owned. I’ve got the Gaia Tartan pyjamas in red and green for the ultimate festive look, but you can choose from a range of colours, with matching family sets available to ensure everyone looks the part.

Here are five simple, crowd-pleasing ideas for Christmas morning breakfast.

Smoked salmon and soft scrambled eggs

This is the kind of breakfast that feels celebratory, yet takes just minutes to prepare – ideal for a cosy, slow Christmas morning. Slowly cook the eggs until they’re glossy and just set, then fold through a splash of cream or crème fraîche, along with a handful of chopped chives. Serve with slices of smoked salmon and buttered toast, or a toasted bagel. Add a squeeze of lemon and a twist of black pepper for extra flavour.

Festive cinnamon rolls

Christmas morning and cinnamon are a natural match. You can make the dough the night before and let it rise in the fridge, so all you need to do is bake them while the rest of the house wakes up. The scent alone feels like part of the celebration. Drizzle with a simple icing sugar glaze or add orange zest for a festive twist.

Festive fruit salad

A lighter option that still feels seasonal. Choose festive fruits that bring colour to the table: pomegranate seeds, clementines, kiwi, mango or red grapes. A little syrup made with honey and orange juice ties everything together. Serve chilled for a refreshing contrast to the richer dishes.

Panettone French toast

Panettone is a December staple in many homes, and using it for French toast makes it even more indulgent. Dip thick slices in an egg mixture scented with vanilla, then fry until golden. Dust with icing sugar and serve with berries or a spoonful of mascarpone. It feels luxurious, without requiring much effort.

Buck’s Fizz or fresh orange juice

A glass of Buck’s Fizz is a classic start to Christmas morning if you fancy something sparkling. Otherwise, freshly squeezed orange juice keeps things bright and refreshing. Either option works well alongside both sweet and savoury dishes.

Christmas morning doesn’t have to be busy to feel memorable. A relaxed breakfast, a warm pair of pyjamas and a little time to yourself can be just as special as the main meal later in the day.
