No matter how big or small, all travel adventures have their merit. Simply put, however, some travel experiences are simply just better than others. At the top of the list are those experiences that awaken our senses, making us feel fully alert and human – like the wonderful stillness of mountain air, or the calming sound of waves lapping palm-fringed shores.
For food lovers like myself, of course, there’s nothing quite like a trip that tantalises the tastebuds. So if, like me, you travel with food in mind, here are five destinations that’ll truly whet your appetite.

Paris, France
It’s no secret that France is known for its food and drink scene, widely regarded as being the birthplace of contemporary fine dining. And, if you’ll be visiting the French capital of Paris, you don’t necessarily need to go anywhere overly fancy to enjoy a memorable meal. You’ll find that the quality of the food is extremely high wherever you go, as the industry can be so competitive that most establishments wouldn’t survive if they were offering a below par service.
Tuscany, Italy
Tuscany is often at the top of foodie bucket lists, for good reason. For one thing, it’s simply beautiful here; everywhere you look, the sights are simply stunning. Plus, this is the ultimate place to come to experience the dolce vita – the sweet life. The people of Tuscany know how to live well, and they know that food is a big part of that. There are no processed meals here. Instead, what you’ll find is simple, delicious food, prepared with love using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
San Sebastian, Spain
Based within the heart of Spain’s Basque Country, San Sebastian is an excellent choice of destination for anyone who travels by belly. It may not be as big as some other Spanish cities, but it’s got a great history where its food and drink is concerned. Plus, the charming, compact nature of the town only adds to the overall experience.
Their speciality is pintxos – a tapas-like appetiser, often comprising different toppings served on bread, designed to be shared and talked over along with a glass of wine or beer. If you’re looking for something fancier though, rest assured you’ll find that here too. As San Sebastien boasts more Michelin Stars per capita than anywhere else in the world besides Kyoto, there are plenty of high-end, fine dining restaurants here too.
Coffee Axis, Columbia
If you’ll be visiting Columbia, you simply have to try the locally grown coffee in the Coffee Axis, otherwise known as the Coffee Region or Coffee Triangle, found in the Paisa region of rural Columbia. As one of the world’s biggest coffee growers, this is somewhere that really knows a thing or two about how to brew a decent cup of coffee. And, with a number of local coffee tours available, you could also spend some time learning more about the history and development of the coffee industry, if you like.
New York City, United States
Last but not least, New York City is a popular foodie destination and, arugably, one of very few cities which could rival London for the title of culinary capital of the world. Here, you’ll find tasty street food like New York bagels and New York-style pizza, to elegant Michelin Star restaurants and everything in between. There’s a brilliant craft beer scene in the city, too. Though there are many other attractions in the Big Apple, you could easily make your whole trip about food!
