Eat a balanced diet

One of the best things ways to maintain optimal health and wellbeing, is to eat a balanced diet. This means consuming foods which can provide all the necessary nutrients your body needs to function at its best. A balanced diet includes fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein sources, healthy fats and low-fat dairy.

Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants, supporting your immune system and helping to prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Similarly, whole grains like brown rice, wholemeal bread and oatmeal are a terrific fibre source, helping you to stay feeling full while also supporting your digestive health.

Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues, and supporting muscle mass. Good lean protein sources include chicken, fish, beans, and tofu. At the same time, healthy fats like avocado, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are essential for effective brain functioning, hormone production, and overall health.

Additionally, low-fat dairy products like milk, yoghurt, and cheese are fantastic sources of calcium, which supports bone health. .

It can be difficult to stick to a healthy eating routine, especially when travelling, but by aiming to eat a more balanced diet, you can improve your health and wellbeing and enjoy a happier, healthier life.

Detox your liver

If you’re keen to cleanse your body of toxins and impurities, consider a liver detox. There are several different ways to detox your liver, but some of the most common means include limiting the amount of alcohol you consume, eating a more balanced diet, and upping your intake of foods known to naturally detoxify the liver like leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables, nuts, turmeric, citrus foods, beetroot, blueberries, cranberries, and fatty fish.

Avoid processed foods

While they can taste appealing, processed foods are among the food groups you should aim to eliminate from your diet. An occasional treat can be forgiven, but processed foods are loaded with additives, preservatives, and unhealthy fats that can wreak havoc on your health. So, aim to keep your consumption to a minimum.

Most processed foods are high in calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats which, when consumed regularly, can contribute to weight gain, obesity, and an increased risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Additionally, processed foods lack essential nutrients, which are often stripped from the foods during the manufacturing process. Consequently, eating these foods can result in a lack of vitamins, minerals, and fibre in your diet, leading to nutrient deficiencies and other health problems.

Processed foods are also generally high in sodium, which can initiate high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and other health problems.

It may take discipline, but eliminating processed foods from your diet can improve your health, reduce your risk of chronic diseases, and enable you to enjoy a happier, healthier life.

Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining optimal health and wellbeing.

Our bodies are made up of at least 60% water, and water plays a crucial role in various bodily functions like regulating our body temperature, transporting nutrients and oxygen, lubricating joints, supporting kidney function, and aiding digestion.

When we’re dehydrated, we might experience fatigue, headaches, constipation, and difficulty concentrating, which can negatively impact our health and wellbeing.

It’s important that we drink enough water to maintain proper hydration levels, and support our overall health. For women, this usually drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, while men should aim for at least 2.5 litres.

Control portion sizes

Managing portion sizes is an effective way to control calorie intake and maintain a healthy weight.

Start by using smaller plates or bowls, as they can help you to reduce the amount of food you eat. It can also help to use measuring cups or food scales to portion out your meals, and prevent overeating.

Additionally, avoid the temptation to eat straight from the source – like straight from a bag of crisps, or a tub of ice cream – as this can lead to mindless eating and overconsumption.

When eating, take things slowly and savour your food. This can help you to feel full faster, and prevent overeating. Additionally, pay attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Don’t wait until you’re feeling famished to eat, and make sure you stop eating when you feel full, even if food is left on your plate.

Cook at home

Cooking at home is an excellent way to maintain healthy eating habits for your wellness. When you cook at home, you have complete control over your ingredients. Often, this can make it easier to choose healthy, nutritious ingredients and avoid unhealthy additives like salt, sugar, and saturated fats.

In addition, cooking at home allows you to portion your meals appropriately, helping you to ensure that you’re not overeating.

Preparing your meals can also help you to save money as eating out can be expensive and, more often than not, nothing tastes better than a home-cooked meal!

Don’t skip meals

Skipping meals might seem like a quick fix when it comes to losing weight, but it can lead to overeating and other unhealthy eating habits. Therefore, rather than skipping meals, we should aim to eat regular, balanced meals throughout the day. This will help us to maintain our energy levels and reduce the risk of overeating.

In addition, it pays to factor healthy snacks into your diet so that you can keep your energy levels stable throughout the day.

The only exception to this rule would be if you are practicing intermittent fasting, or if your doctor has advised you to abstain from eating ahead of a medical procedure.

Supplements

Taking supplements can help you to ensure that your body is getting all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients it needs.

While a balanced and nutritious diet alone can enable you to achieve this, dietary restrictions and lifestyle factors can make it challenging at times. Taking supplements can help to fill nutritional gaps in your diet and support your overall health and wellbeing, even when you don’t have time to shop for healthy ingredients, or cook a healthy meal ‘from scratch’.

For example, those following a vegan or vegetarian diet may be at risk of nutrient deficiencies like vitamin B12, iron, and zinc, primarily found in animal-based foods. If this applies to you, taking supplements can help to ensure that you get enough of these vital nutrients. Similarly, if you have underlying health conditions, you may need to take specialised supplements.

While supplements can be beneficial, they should not be used as a substitute for a healthy diet, however. Just see them as a valuable way to complement your diet, and ensure you’re taking care of your nutritional needs.
