Fancy getting your hands on some free food? Over the last few weeks, I’ve been using my iPhone to access a variety of complimentary food and drink at well-known restaurants and branded food outlets. I’ve been so impressed by just how much food I’ve managed to claim in this way, I thought I’d write a blog post about the various apps for free food I’ve come across. After all, with the cost of living increasing, you never know just how helpful this information could be.

While most brands use their phone apps to help users locate menus, check nutritional information, pay digitally and collect rewards or loyalty points, many brands actually give away free food via the apps, often to incentivise you to register or download the app, to celebrate your birthday, or to encourage you to visit the brand in-store.

Read on to discover eight branded phone apps you can claim free food through. For deals on groceries purchased at the shop to eat at-home check out the UK Deals website; at present, they’re giving away a £100 Waitrose voucher – just what you need to fill up your fridge and freezer!

8 companies that give free food away via their apps

Barburrito

Sign up to the Barburrito app and input your birthdate. When your birthday comes around, you’ll be able to claim a complimentary classic burrito through the app. You will need to pay for any additional toppings or extras, however (although I recently used this deal and they kindly waived the extras too).

What’s more, if you scan the Barburrito app everytime you eat in the restaurant, you can currently claim a free portion of wings, a side or a dessert after four burritos, and a free burrito after purchasing your ninth burrito.

Greggs

Popular pastry chain, Greggs is another app that rewards you on your birthday. Simply download the app and enter your birthdate, and Greggs will give you a complimentary sweet treat of your choice to celebrate your birthday.

Plus, scan the Greggs app when you make a purchase in-store to collect loyalty points towards edible rewards. Points are collected separately for breakfast items, savouries and bakes, drinks, sandwiches and salads, sweet treats and hot food. You need to collect nine loyalty points in each category in order to receive your reward.

Auntie Anne’s

American bakery chain, Auntie Anne’s rewards new app users with a complimentary classic pretzel (original, cinnamon, vanilla, cheese, sesame, or almond) when they scan the app for the first time.

Plus, receive another free classic pretzel after making four purchases, and earn cash credits on every order placed through the app too.

If that’s not enough, you’ll also be able to get your hands on a free classic pretzel to celebrate your birthday!

Krispy Kreme

Download the Krispy Kreme app and sign-in to receive a complimentary original glazed ring doughnut.

Enter your date of birth into the app and, when your birthday arrives, you’ll be able to pick any doughnut you like, completely free of charge.

Plus, earn 10 ‘Smiles’ for every £1 spent in-store, online or at participating retailers. You can also earn Smiles through Krispy Kreme’s social media pages; check out the Social section of the app for more information.

Costa

Like Barburrito and Greggs, the Costa app offers a birthday treat. Download the app and enter your birthdate, and you’ll be able to choose a complimentary sweet treat when your birthday comes around.

Plus, rack up loyalty points or ‘beans’ every time you make an in-store purchase. Collect eight beans to receive a free drink voucher, which will show up in the ‘Rewards’ section of the app.

Furthermore, Costa runs regular promotions whereby you can get complimentary drinks or treats when you purchase a certain item. This week, for example, they’ve been given away a complimentary fruit cooler or lemonade with the purchase of any hot drink via the app.

In addition, you can also earn beans for referring friends. Every time you refer a friend and they sign up using your code, you’ll both receive five bonus beans. Here’s my referral link 😉

Turtle Bay

While the Turtle Bay app will offer you £10 off your bill on your birthday, you don’t need to wait for your special day in order to benefit from free food perks.

Simply download the app to receive two complimentary rum punches during restaurant happy hour (exact timings may vary between restaurants).

You can also collect perks or ‘turtles’ via the Turtle Bay app. Receive £5 off your bill with three turtles, £10 off with six turtles, and £15 off after nine turtles.

Hotel Chocolat

Chocaholics are going to love this one. Download the Hotel Chocolat VIP.ME app to receive 20% off all hot and cold drinks, ices and cakes purchased in-store, in addition to a £5 birthday gift voucher and regular offers for VIP.ME members.

Olio

While Olio is the only app on this list that isn’t owned by a food and drink brand or restaurant, Olio is still well-worth a mention. Not only does it enable you to access free food, but you can also giveaway any unwanted food or leftovers via the app, helping to minimise food waste.

Is Olio free to use?

Yes. The Olio app is free of charge to download and access from your phone.

So, you now have seven new apps to download, and seven opportunities to get your hands on some free food!

Can you think of any other branded phone apps for free food? If so, please leave a comment to let me know – I’d love to expand this list!
