Picture the scene. You’ve meticulously planned your dream holiday, or vacation – a far-flung getaway filled with new experiences, and opportunities to relax and unwind with loved ones. You arrive at your destination, eager to relax and make memories. But then, things go wrong – you connect to the hotel’s Wi-Fi, only to discover the hard way that unsecured networks can be a gateway to a cybersecurity nightmare.
There’s no denying that public Wi-Fi can be an incredible convenience to modern society. Not only does it enable us to stay connected while travelling and access essential travel apps on the move, but it can even make it possible for us to work remotely from our favourite destinations.
However, the potential lack of security when connecting to public networks means we could run the risk of exposing our personal data, or infecting our devices with malware, unless we educate ourselves on how to stay safe on a public network before we travel.
Accessing free public Wi-Fi can be a convenient, cost-effective way to stay connected while travelling. However, it’s important to be aware of the cybersecurity risk it can pose to your personal information.
The ease of connecting to a public Wi-Fi network can lure us into a false sense of security. Unlike our home networks, which are password-protected and encrypted, public Wi-Fi networks often operate openly, with no barriers to entry for hackers. The so-called ‘man-in-the-middle’ attack is a tactic used to exploit the lack of security on public Wi-Fi networks. Hackers essentially become digital eavesdroppers, positioning themselves between your device and the network. They can then intercept your data traffic, enabling them to steal log-in credentials, and access your emails, messages, and browsing history. This stolen information can be used maliciously, causing significant financial and personal harm – the last thing you’d want to encounter on your dream trip abroad!

While connecting to public WiFi while travelling (or anywhere, for that matter) can be risky for your personal cybersecurity, with a few precautions in place, it’s possible to do so in a safe way, eliminating the risk of data theft, malware infections, or hacking attacks.
To get started, you’ll need to connect via a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This enables you to encrypt your internet traffic, creating a secure tunnel between your device and the internet. Effectively, this renders your data unreadable to anyone snooping on the network, protecting your login credentials, financial information, and browsing activity. Invest in a reputable VPN service with a proven track record of security, and strong encryption protocols. Look for a service with servers in various locations to ensure optimal connectivity throughout your travels.
One of the most crucial online safety best practices you can follow is to think before you click on any links. Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi. Don’t access sensitive websites like online banking, or enter log-in credentials for important accounts when using unsecured networks. Limit browsing to non-critical activities like social media, or general news updates.
Last but not least, if your mobile data plan allows for it and data charges aren’t going to become an issue, consider using your phone’s WiFi hotspot function to create a secure internet connection. This means you won’t need to rely on public WiFi networks at all while travelling. However, don’t forget to keep an eye on data usage – especially if you’ll be travelling for extended periods.
