The Best Destinations for Golfing Getaways

Golf is a sport that tends to provoke divided opinion. While some of us might not find the idea of successfully navigating a golf ball into a tiny hole particularly enthralling, for others, the idea of spending a sunny afternoon working your way around a golf course and perfecting your putting stroke is rather a pleasant thought.

If you find yourself falling more into the latter camp, you’ll be excited to hear that I’ve spoken to some of my favourite travel bloggers to find out which resorts and destinations they recommend for golf holidays and breaks.

Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge – Orlando, Florida

“If you’re looking for one of the best golf destinations, you’ve gotta try out Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Florida. It was the legendary golfer’s home away from home. Each year, the Arnold Palmer Invitational is hosted at this course. You can stay at the lodge, enjoy the clubhouse which holds the ‘Winners Cup’, and enjoy 27 rounds of tour championship golf.

It’s a golfer’s paradise, and definitely one course you’ll want to take your shot at. It’s a beautiful lodge away from the hustle and bustle of the city; you’ll wonder if you’re even still in Orlando. Old Course – St. Andrew’s, Scotland

“St. Andrews, on the east coast of Scotland, is the location that best exemplifies the sport of golf. Known as the “Cathedral of Golf”, St. Andrews is where the game of golf all began. The whole city embodies the game and the historic customs, [so if you’re looking to explore the question of How Did Golf Start, you’ve come to the right place.] The traditions of golf are taken very seriously here and are followed, whether it be on the course or in the club houses. 

“There are several courses available; New Course, Duke’s Course, The Castle Course, Eden Course, Balgove Course, Strathytyrum Course and the Jubilee Course.  However, the Old Course is the legendary course that all golfers want to play on, located in the historic section of St. Andrews and surrounded by St. Andrews Bay. The Old Course is open to the public, but it’s necessary to make reservations a good year in advance, although there is a way to golf on the Old Course without a reservation.

Foxhills Golf and Country Club – Surrey, south east England

If you’re looking for a choice of golf courses in close proximity to London, Foxhills Golf and Country Club in Surrey might be right up your fairway. Just a 20-minute drive from Heathrow Airport and 8-minutes from the M25 and the M3, Foxhills is easily accessible from London. Set in 400-acres of beautiful heath and woodland, the country estate near Ottershaw is home to two Championship courses and a par three course.

World Golf named The Longcross as one of the top 100 golf courses in England. The PGA cup was held on the tree-lined course in 2017 featuring top club professionals from Britain, Ireland and the USA. The second championship course at Foxhills is the Bernard Hunt Course named after Bernard Hunt MBE former Ryder Cup captain. For beginners, the Manor Course par three is perfect which means there’s a game waiting for all levels of player.

Lessons are available with Foxhill’s PGA qualified golf professionals and there’s a putting green, driving range and pro shop. As well as the golf facilities, Foxhills has a range of other activities from tennis, yoga and a spa, together with dining options.  Check into the on-site hotel and make it a full-on golf break or weekend.

Mijas Golf – Costa Del Sol, Spain

“Costa del Sol is a paradise for golfers, with over 70 golf courses where they can play their favourite sport. One of the most popular destinations for a golfing getaway on Costa del Sol is Mijas Golf. Located just 20 minutes from Malaga Airport, Mijas Golf has two professional courses (Los Lagos and Los Olivos) open for every type of golfer, beginner or advanced. Often here at Mijas Golf, big competitions take place, such as the San Miguel Golf Cup or the Andalucia Golf Challenge (all organised by the Golf Federation).

Every Saturday, there are local competitions organised by the expat community in which everyone can take place.

The entire area around Mijas Golf is concentrated around golfers, from hotels with dedicated golf desks where you can can book tee times, to restaurants where players gather for a beer and a tapas after the game.”
