70% of us struggle to get a good night’s sleep while travelling, according to research published by Princess Cruises. Whether it’s the turmoil of jet lag, the excitement – or, unfamiliarity – connected with being in a new environment, or perhaps just a comfort issue, travellers often report tossing and turning in hotel beds.

In an attempt to enhance guest comfort, many hotels are opting to upgrade rooms with trendy divan beds. While these can certainly add a luxury look and feel to a hotel room, however, it’s important to get all the different elements right in order to ensure a good night’s sleep for guests. Installing divan beds in hotel rooms isn’t a quick fix; here’s what else needs to be considered, based on my experience of hotel stays.

Choose the right mattress topper

It’s pointless investing in quality divan beds, without buying mattress toppers to go with them. From waterproof latex, to comfortable memory foam, feather or wool mattress toppers, there are several different options to consider. Soft toppers can be added for a plusher feel, while firmer ones provide additional support. Aim to choose an average level of thickness and firmness in order to cater as best as possible to individual preferences.

Invest in quality bedding

It’s no secret that bedding can make a big difference to how well we sleep at night. Hoteliers can elevate their bedding by choosing fabrics made from natural materials like lightweight cotton or linen for breathability, or opting for cashmere and fleece for warmth and comfort. Similarly, silky-smooth satin and microfibre sheets can add a touch of glamour.

Provide seasonal duvets

Temperature regulation is crucial to a comfortable night’s sleep, particularly during extremes of hot and cold weather. Most reputable hotels will switch duvets around for summer and winter, opting for lower tog options during warmer weather to prevent overheating, and higher tog duvets during winter for extra warmth. Consider storing a spare duvet in the wardrobe so your guests can choose between a lightweight, or heavier duvet.

Upgrade pillows

Don’t overlook the importance of pillows in helping us to sleep better while travelling. Not only do pillows provide comfort, but they also help to support our neck and spine. This is why it can be helpful for hoteliers to offer guests a selection of pillows with varying firmness levels. Providing the right pillow based on sleep position—firm for side sleepers, medium-firm for back sleepers, and thin or no pillow for front sleepers—ensures personalised comfort.

Adding divan beds to hotel rooms can make for a wonderful way to drive the guest experience – as long as hoteliers are prepared to take the necessary steps to get it right. This is no quick fix, or overnight trendy transformation; put some thought into the process, and you’ll truly be able to say you’ve done all you can to ensure a good night’s sleep for your guests.
