I’ve lost count of the number of restaurants that have popped up in Cardiff in recent years, but sadly, traditional Nepalese restaurants still seem few and far between. Luckily, if you travel a little further into the heart of South Wales, you’ll find growing numbers of Nepalese restaurants, many of which are run by retired Gurkha soldiers. You may remember I featured Yaks and Yetis in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire on my blog a little while back. Now, it’s the turn of Gurkha Corner on Nevill Street in Abergavenny.

Arriving at Gurkha Corner at around 2pm, we were the only guests in the entire restaurant. Not feeling particularly peckish, we ploughed straight on into our main courses.

After toying between cheese chicken and koshi salmon, I eventually succumbed to the chicken nettle curry (£8.95). Gently spiced, this dish was packed with tender, melt-in-your-mouth chicken and fresh coriander. The nettles were blended in with the curry sauce and whilst it didn’t exactly leave my tongue tingling, it had a peppery taste and it left a subtle prickly sensation at the back of my throat.

My partner tucked into the pork chops (£10.95). The menu actually states pork belly, but pork chops were offered as an alternative on the date of our visit. They were cooked so well, we could hardly taste the difference. Served sizzling, the fat was sinfully crispy and juicy, and the pork was irresistibly lean, topped with heaps of sliced mushrooms, chopped garlic and coriander, teamed with red chard. This is what I’ll be ordering next time I come here!

In addition, we shared an aromatic lamb biryani consisting of fluffy pilau rice and generous chunks of slow-cooked lamb, finished with fresh tomato.

The biryani was served with an ample helping of creamy mint yoghurt raita, sprinkled with chilli powder; the perfect antidote for a fiery tongue.

We also went halves on a garlic naan bread (£2.95). Cut into four large triangles and served in a basket, this was a soft, doughy affair with laden with finely chopped garlic cloves and drizzled with a dreamy, buttery dressing.

To wash down our meal, we shared a bottle of Gurkha beer (£5 for 660ml). Light and mellow, this moderately fizzy beer is the perfect partner for any Nepalese dish.

We had a delicious meal at Gurkha Corner and I have no doubt that I’ll be back for more in future. I only wish it was a little nearer to where I live. It is worth noting that there is another branch of this restaurant in Brecon.

  1. Looks like a delicious meal, particularly liking the pork chops, mushroom and chard. I’ve never been to a Nepalese restaurant before but we do have one locally so perhaps I should go and try it out now, I think it’s called The Little Gurka or something similar!

    • Ooh, I would totally go and check it out if I were you. Nepalese food is delicious, and they are such friendly, welcoming people too.

  2. What a little find this is! I’ve not had much Nepalese food but it looks like really good comfort food.
One to remember for sure. ; )

  3. Wish it was closer to me too. It looks right up my street. Glad the helping of raita was generous. I could eat loads of that x

    • It’s a lovely restaurant. I was delighted when I saw the raita – and that was just for one person! Delicious 🙂

  4. Looks and sounds wonderful. Don’t think I’ve ever tried Nepalese food however you now have me wondering if there is a Ghurka restaurant in Aberdeen. I’m off to check!

  5. Gurkha beer ? sounds really good to wash down your meal. Never had one ☝️ But, looking forward to having one.

  6. It looks like a good Nepalese meal I didn’t know that Cardiff has a buoyant dine scene. R

    • Unfortunately Cardiff itself doesn’t have that many Nepalese restaurants, but I find there are more elsewhere in South Wales – Brecon, Abergavenny for example – and there are a few near my mother’s home in Ross-on-Wye.

  7. Wow, this all looks so good! I recently went to a Nepalese restaurant in Washington, would love to try it again!

  8. I had amazing Nepalese food in South Dakota of all places! There’s none near us now.. I keep wishing!

    • Oh, if only! I guess from reading some of the comments on here, I’m lucky to be relatively close to a handful of Nepalese restaurants

  9. I’ve not really tried a lot of nepalese food although it’s been recommended to me before. This looks great. I’d have ordered the pork belly too! My favourite 🙂

    • I’m really into pork at the moment. I ate a lot of it whilst in Bulgaria recently, too. I love Nepalese food, haven’t tried pork belly like this before but it was delicious!

  10. Nepalese food seems difficult to find doesn’t it? I found a lot of similarities with North Indian dishes that I know well, and really enjoyed what I’ve tried. Your meal looks very tasty too.

    • It does around these ways, perhaps there is more of it in cities like Bristol or London, I’m not sure. I guess because I don’t get to have it all the time, it does make it all the more nicer when I do get to have it 🙂

  11. You made me so hungry. I discovered Nepalese cuisine in NY some years ago and am absolutely addicted to the dumplings. Now I am going to have to try and make some of the food myself as I have a craving…lol…not much Nepalese food in Cyprus I’m afraid.

    • Aww, I love Nepalese food too! Ever since I found it, it’s always been my favourite cuisine. The fact that I don’t get to eat it very often only serves to make me want it even more!

  12. The pork chops sound amazing! I haven’t had Nepalese cuisine for a while as there was a Nepalese restaurant near our flat but then we moved 5 years ago – I miss it now!

    • It’s one of my favourite cuisines of all. I’ll be ordering the pork chops for myself on my next visit to this restaurant!
