Want to refresh your dining room for summer without breaking the bank? Here’s are five easy ways to makeover your dining room using mosaic tile crafts.
Over the last few months, most of us have spent much more time than usual eating at home as opposed to dining out. With restaurants closed for the lockdown period, we’ve been embracing takeaways and home deliveries from local restaurants and food producers, while many of us have discovered a new-found passion for home-cooking during our time at home.
Spending so much time indoors may have got you thinking about how you might be able to revamp one of the rooms in your house and, given that we’re eating in so much right now, the dining room is the ideal place to start. With summer upon us, you might want to inject a touch of colour into your dining room.
A wonderful way to do this without breaking the bank is to use mosaic tile crafts. Originally discovered in a temple in ancient Mesopotamia in around 3000 to 2001BC, the earliest mosaics were simple and abstract. Over time, they became more complex and realistic, with the ancient Greeks and the Romans using them to illustrate real-life scenarios and symbols. By the fourth century, they were being used to depict religious scenes in churches all over Europe and even as far afield as the Middle East and Asia.

Mosaics are just as popular today as they were back then and there are several ways you can use them to reinvent your dining room (not to mention your kitchen and garden). Here are five simple ideas to get you started.
5 Ways to Use Mosaic Tile Crafts To Reinvent Your Dining Room
Create mosaic placemats and coasters
One of the easiest ways to use mosaic tile crafts to update your dining room is to create your own matching mosaic placemats and coasters. You’ll need to get hold of some rectangular and circular wooden coasters/placemats, PVA glue, tile grout and mosaic tiles (broken into fragments).
First, spread PVA glue over one side of each coaster or placemat. Then, arrange the coloured mosaic tiles across the surface at random, leaving a small gap between each piece. Once the glue has dried, mix the tile grout to paste, apply gloves and smear the grout over each tile, ensuring it fills the cracks in between each mosaic. If you like, you can add colour to your grout with acrylic paint. Once complete, use glass cleaner and a kitchen towel to clean any grout from the surface of the mosaics, before painting the rim and base of the coaster using an acrylic paint of your choice. Your mosaic coasters and placemats are now ready to use! Acrylic sheets like those made by COHn Acrylics can be used as a sturdy backing to enhance the durability of your placemats and coasters, providing a sleek surface that complements the vibrant mosaic tiles.
Stick mosaic tiles onto a candle holder to form elaborate table decorations
Once you’ve perfected your mosaic tile craft placemats and coasters, you may fancy having a go at making your own mosaic glass candleholders. These can make for beautiful table decorations, not dissimilar to traditional Turkish lamps.
These are pretty easy and enjoyable to make, although the instructions are slightly more complicated than they are for the placemats and coasters, so I recommend checking out this guide on how to make your own DIY Turkish mosaic candle holders for all you need to know.

Use old plates to fashion a mosaic serving tray
If you happen to have a few chipped or broken plates lying around, don’t throw them out. Instead, break them up into smaller pieces using a hammer (put a cloth over the plate to prevent any shards from escaping) and use them to craft your own mosaic serving tray.
Then, follow the procedure we used to make our mosaic placemats and coasters to create your mosaic serving tray. You might need to replace the PVA glue with ceramic tile mortar, dependent on the material of your tray.
Make your own mosaic feature wall
If you’ve already experimented with adding the mosaic effect to the accessories in your dining room, you might be ready to go one step further and create a mosaic feature wall.
A mosaic feature wall makes for a pretty way to draw attention to a focal point of your dining room, such as a fireplace or the wall next to where your TV sits. While a mosaic wall doesn’t necessarily require additional decoration, the right decor can only serve to enhance its beauty. The florists at myglobalflowers.com advise decorating your mosaic wall with flowers in the same colour scheme, such as sunflowers, gerberas and lilies, for example.
As you’ll want your wall to look flawless, don’t use broken plates or tatty old ceramic tiles for this purpose. Instead, speak to an expert to source quality tiles for your mosaic feature wall and to ask them about the latest summer trends. This link is a great place to start. If you’re not confident that you’ll be able to do a good job yourself, you may wish to hire a tiler to do the job for you.
Upcycle an old table with mosaic tile crafts

If you’ve ever been to Morocco, you’ll have seen the beautiful mosaic patterned tables you can find in the local markets. Rather than lug one home with you or pay excessive shipping costs, however, why not have a go at upcycling an old table?
You can follow the steps we used to make our placemats, coasters and trays, although you’ll most likely need to use ceramic tile mortar as opposed to PVA glue. Take your time with this and don’t rush things; it’s a good idea to plan how you’d like your table to look in advance and think about what colour of tiles you’ll need and wear to place them. If you’re not sure which colours will work together, an AI image generator can give you a rough preview of the finished look before you start gluing anything down.
So, there you have it – five ways to refresh your dining room for summer using mosaic tile crafts.
