Around three weeks ago, Brown’s Brasserie closed its doors for the very last time, moving out all of its furniture in the process. I was a bit disappointed as I quite liked the restaurant (click here to see my past reviews), and it was a bit strange to see it so empty.
Then, almost out of nowhere, appeared The Slug and Lettuce.
The venue hasn’t exactly had a complete revamp – you can definitely still recognise it as old Brown’s – but it has gained a collection of funky furniture (both indoor and outdoor) in shades of pink and purple, injecting a much-needed dose of colour into the otherwise dull-looking Friary Centre on Greyfriars Road, Cardiff.

One of over 70 bars of its kind in the UK and owned by the Stonegate Pub Company, The Slug and Lettuce boasts an extensive food menu and an impressive range of cocktails, wines, lager and beers.
The menu is predominantly British, although Lebanese, Italian, Mexican and Spanish dishes also feature. Prices are slightly above average so be sure to book a table for a Monday, when The Slug and Lettuce is currently offering 50% off food, while cocktails are 2-for-1 from Thursday to Saturday.
At the bar/restaurant launch on 24th April, we were lucky enough to try out some free cocktails, including the Strawberries and Cream and the Metropolitan, usually priced at £8.45 each.
Pictured on the left in the below picture, the French Martini was my favourite – a delicious concoction of Absolut Vanilla vodka and Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur, shaken with pineapple juice.

I really like the look and feel of The Slug and Lettuce – it’s much more exciting than Brown’s was. The food menu is pretty impressive, the cocktail menu even more so. It’s only a stone’s throw away from the office where I work, so I’ll definitely be popping back in again soon so that I can really get to grips with the food menu – and try out some more cocktails!
