5 of the best skiing resorts in the world

Zermatt, Switzerland

This incredible Swiss resort is notable largely thanks to a single peak, the Matterhorn – visible from the village itself. In Zermatt, the ski season extends well into spring, thanks largely to the resort’s high altitude. As prices can be costly, it’s the perfect destination for skiers looking to splash some cash, who perhaps have some experience under their belts already; beginner skiers may prefer to stay elsewhere. Another bonus of Zermatt is that the ski resort is car-free, giving it a distinctive charm.

Aspen, US

Among the most famous ski resorts in the United States is Aspen, Colorado. A favourite haunt for many celebrities, it offers plenty of luxury hotels and high-end shopping opportunities. There are plenty of ski slopes to choose from, spread across a quartet of local mountains. The resort is family-friendly, and offers plenty of quality ski-schools. It’s therefore ideal for families looking for a high-end experience, wit lessons available for beginner skiers, and opportunities to unwind away from the slopes.

Chamonix, France

This Frenapresch resort is arguably the birthplace of modern skiing. It’s perfect for experienced skier, and those looking to push themselves, with a variety of challenging black runs and off-piste sections to take on. Like Zermatt, it offers breathtaking views of a stunning local mountain, Mont Blanc.

Niseko, Japan

Japanese ski adventures are rarely considered by those in the UK, but if you’re planning a trip to the Far East and you have a taste for skiing, there are several excellent Japanese ski resorts to consider. Niseko is known for the peerless quality of the snow, and the excellent facilities. The piste is maintained to an extremely high standard, and there’s an apres ski experience that’s quite unlike what you might find in Europe. While you’re staying here, be sure to find some time to take a dip in the natural hot springs.

Banff/Lake Louise, Canada

For those making the trip to Canada, there are several amazing ski resorts to explore. However, Lake Louise stands out thanks to its stunning scenery, and the sheer breadth of accessible slopes to tackle here. There are three resorts available, including Lake Louise itself alongside nearby Sunshine Village and Mount Norquay. Time your visit right, and you might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife, with elk, bears and moose all common to this part of America.
