Many of us dream of quitting our jobs to pursue a profession that’ll enable us to travel full-time. In reality, however, balancing adventures with work commitments actually be quite logistically challenging. If you’re able to ensure you’ll have a solid source of income to pay for everything you’ll need during your extended stay, however, living the digital nomad lifestyle can make for a great experience.
A recent study found that almost a third of UK workers are considering a career change this year. With most travel restrictions now eased, many will be considering adopting a nomadic lifestyle. Many traditional professions don’t support this ambition, of course – but in the modern world, there are plenty that do.
If you’re suffering from a severe case of wanderlust, here are five side hustles that could help you to fund your travel goals along the way.
Tutoring
People often want to and – in many cases, need to – learn new things in order to progress in life. If you have core skills or expert knowledge in a given field, you could earn an additional income by teaching online.
You could teach English to students in somewhere like Indonesia or Africa, for example, and grab a piece of a market worth around £1.4bn in 2018.
Online trading
There are lots of different ways to invest and trade online. One option is CFD trading, for example, which involves speculating on price movements of various assets, like currency, stock or commodities.
However, trading isn’t a pursuit you should take lightly; undertake plenty of research before deciding whether it might be a good option for you or not – this isn’t something you should just dabble in.
Copy or content writing
Have you always had a way with words? If so, you could put those skills to use as a professional copy or content writer. You’ll work with brands to create engaging campaigns for everything from websites and social media, to email and print adverts.
Alternatively, you could find work proofreading and editing other writers’ efforts in a consultant-style role.
Graphic design
On a similar note, graphic designers create branded visuals for websites, posters and more. Ideally, you’ll have a portfolio of your best work to help in securing work and attracting new clients who can fund your travels on a retainer basis.

Renting your property
If you’re planning to travel for extended periods of time and you already own a property, there’s little point in it sitting empty when it could be paying your mortgage for you. Instead, consider renting out your home on a platform like Air BnB instead; you could be surprised at just how much you could make.
Ideally, you’ll have a friend or family member living nearby who’s willing to check in on things and help stays go smoothly.
