Travelling isn’t just about exploring new destinations; it’s also an opportunity to break away from our routines, and indulge in new experiences. While we meticulously plan our outfits and essentials for a trip, however, one aspect that we tend to overlook is the question of what to eat while travelling.
Whether you’re embarking on a road trip, hitting the trails for a hike, or simply exploring new cities, having a few snacks to hand can help you to keep hunger at bay and stay energised while travelling, while also enabling you to cut the cost of travel.

Here are seven simple yet satisfying snacks ideal for nibbling on the go.
Homemade granola bars
Granola bars are a great go-to staple for travellers. Not only are they light to carry, and convenient to tuck into on the go, but they’re also packed with nutrition. While store-bought options are readily available, making your own granola bars allows you to control the ingredients and, crucially, avoid excess sugar and fat. For his reason, homemade granola bars are ideal sugar free snacks for people with diabetes. Load your bars with nuts, seeds, and dried fruits for a delicious and energising snack while travelling.
Raw vegetables with homemade dip
For a refreshing low calorie choice, slice up fresh vegetables like peppers, cucumbers, and carrots and team them with a homemade dip like hummus, or sour cream and chive. Not only will they satisfy hunger cravings between meals, but they’ll also help to keep you feeling fuelled whether you’re heading off on a road trip to your destination, or preparing snacks for a day-out while staying in self-catering accommodation.
Roasted nuts and seeds
Roasted nuts and seeds make for a quick and easy snack to enjoy while travelling, while also offering a much-needed energy boost. Packed with protein and healthy fats, nuts and seeds are perfect for keeping hunger at bay during long journeys. Aim to pack roasted nuts such as groundnuts, pistachios, almonds, and peanuts for a tasty treat on the move.
Wholesome sandwiches
Sandwiches have long been a favourite travel companion, praised for their versatility, convenience, and affordability. Keep it simple with classic fillings like lean meats, cheese, and veg, or get creative with different ingredients and condiments. For a warm, hearty option, consider adding chicken cutlets in oven. Pack your sandwiches in an airtight container or wrap them in foil, and store them in a cooler bag for an easy meal on the go.
Soups
Provided you’ve got a suitable flask or travel mug to transport them in, soups are a convenient and nourishing option for busy travellers looking to keep hunger pangs at bay, especially if you’ll be travelling during the winter months. Make your own homemade soup using fresh vegetables, or pick up a ready-made soup at the supermarket if you’re in a hurry. Try my slow cooker pumpkin soup or yellow split pea soup, if you’re in need of inspiration.
Fresh fruit
Whether it’s a crisp apple, juicy orange, or sweet mango, fruits are among the simplest, yet most satiating snacks you could possibly hope to enjoy while travelling. Not only do they provide a natural energy boost, but they also satisfy your sweet cravings without any added sugars. And, if you’ll be travelling to a country known for warmer climates, indulging in fresh fruit also makes for a great way to cool down!
Hydration essentials
On the subject of keeping cool while travelling, don’t forget to stay hydrated while travelling! Pack a reusable water bottle and refill it regularly to keep yourself refreshed and energised throughout your journey. For an added boost, you can also include electrolyte packets or coconut water, if you like.
