With runway views, ambient lighting and touchscreen controls, Bloc Hotel Gatwick just might be the coolest hotel in the airport’s South Terminal.
If you’ve ever flown from London Gatwick airport before, you’ll know it’s not necessarily the nicest way to start your holiday. It usually takes longer to get to than Heathrow Airport, you can expect to queue at check-in and security and there’s usually a fair walk to your gate from the terminal. It’s hardly an ideal scenario, especially if you’re about to board a long-haul flight.
Luckily, you can get a good night’s sleep beforehand and avoid getting stuck in traffic en route to the airport by staying in Bloc Hotel Gatwick, conveniently located on the third floor of the South Terminal, right next to security.

Sleeping on the runway at Bloc Hotel Gatwick
Inspired by classic Japanese capsule hotels and equipped with state-of-the-art technology and facilities, Bloc Hotel Gatwick offers a luxury stay in unique, minimal surroundings.
From ‘Sleep’- a window-less compact cabin measuring just 9.5 sq. metres – to the swanky Runway Suite – a first-class, 32 sq. metre penthouse on the eighth floor with its own lounge and kitchenette – Bloc Hotel Gatwick has nine different room types to suit various group sizes and budgets.
All rooms are styled upon an ultra-modern, sleek design featuring ambient mood lighting, climate control technology, sound proofing, tablet room control, HD LED TV (with the exception of the Twin Rooms), monsoon/drench shower, hairdryer and high-speed WiFi. Meanwhile, some rooms also include complimentary tea and coffee, there are ironing facilities on each floor and the Runway Suite has a free minibar.
Does Bloc Hotel Gatwick have a restaurant?
While Bloc Hotel Gatwick doesn’t have its own restaurant or offer room service, you’ll find 17 different restaurants, cafes and bars located in Gatwick South Terminal. When you stay at Bloc Hotel Gatwick, you’ll be able to access exclusive offers at some of these establishments.
If you’ll be staying for more than one night, you may want to check out the Around Airports website to find businesses around airports in the UK, the US and beyond.

I’ve stayed at Bloc Hotel Gatwick on two occasions, once in a Vista Double Room and once in an Aspire room.
Vista Double Room at Bloc Hotel Gatwick
My Vista Double Room made me feel like I’d been transported through time into the future, with its compact capsule design (from 9.5 sq. metres) and vibrant purple mood lighting.
The window straddling the wall above my bed looked out right onto the runway; it was a shame I didn’t get to see it during the daylight hours. The curtains took the form of electric blinds. I couldn’t work out how to open and close them at first, but then I noticed the tablet sitting next to the bed.
Not only does this nifty little tablet allow you to control the blinds, it also enables you to switch all the lights on and off, adjust the temperature and check-out of your room – all without having to leave the comfort of your soft, pocket sprung king bed (well, until it’s time to check-out and go and catch your flight, at least!)
The bathroom was equally impressive and after seeing the monsoon shower, I knew I’d have no issue getting out of bed in the morning. It was actually styled as an Italian wet room as opposed to a traditional bathroom; the shower drenched the entire room when it was in use, so all surfaces were waterproof and the door was watertight.
Vista Double Rooms at Bloc Hotel Gatwick are currently priced from £87 per night on Booking.com.
Aspire room
Stepping into my Aspire room, I’m taken aback by the panoramic runway views peeking through the enormous windows.
After brewing a fresh coffee using the fancy Dualit coffee machine, I stand and watch in fascination as plane after plane takes off and lands on the runway.
The Armani Roca designer bathroom is just as elaborate, kitted out with an monsoon shower and luxurious Zenology toiletries.
As evening beckons, sunset sends glorious golden rays shooting across the runway, contrasting beautifully with the purple hues lighting up the window frame and the headboard of the bed.
It currently costs from £105 per night to book an Aspire room at Bloc Hotel Gatwick via Booking.com.
If you’re flying from Gatwick Airport’s South terminal sometime soon, I highly recommend staying at Bloc Hotel Gatwick. Based on the two times I’ve stayed here, I can’t imagine staying anywhere else when I fly from Gatwick’s South Terminal. It’s literally right next to the Departures Lounge, it’s often the most affordable option and, in my opinion, it’s far sleeker than the other hotels in the South Terminal. If you’ll be staying for more than one night, you may want to check out the

The hotel looks absolutely beautiful! I live super close to Gatwick, so travelling there hasn’t usually been a problem. But I’ve been putting off going on a holiday since the Southern train strikes as I’m scared I’d never get there on time for my flight! D: I’m definitely going to have to look into this as it seems like a much more convenient to do when catching a flight from the airport. How’s the soundproofing there? Can you hear the planes taking off or is this not much of an issue?
It was so nice 🙂 The sound proofing is good, I couldn’t hear any planes 🙂
This looks such a great hotel – I haven’t flown from Gatwick in years but would definitely look at staying here. Kaz x
It was really different, so modern! 🙂
Ow that sounds like a fab idea!
Maybe Heathrow may do similar !
Especially if your all tired and the travel back is annoying
Heathrow have definitely got hotels on site, but no BLOC Hotel unfortunately – only at Birmingham and Gatwick Airports.
I never realised that airports did this, how cool that you can look out over the runway!
Yeah, most big airports have hotels. Gatwick has quite a few as it is so big.
We tend to always stay the night before a flight as it takes so much stress away! Bloc Hotel looks amazing, I’m definitely going to consider booking there next time. That shower!!
It definitely helps me to feel relaxed and revived ahead of a long flight. The shower was lovely – I didn’t want to get out!
I really like the lookm of the Apire rooms and to have views of the runways is very cool. It looks a great place to stay before you fly. Mich x
They are lovely rooms, although all the rooms are of a great quality. Very comfortable and convenient!
Those are some lovely rooms! I’ve never flown from Gatwick but I’d definitely consider it especially if I could stay here!
It’s definitely worth a look if you are flying from the South Terminal. I’ve stayed here twice now and would definitely go back again.
Sounds like a brilliant way to start a holiday, not having to do the dreaded airport run before you fly, I haven’t flown from Gatwick in a long time, and with the seven children it probably won’t be for a few more years yet, but a stay over in a hotel the night before sounds like the perfect way to start the holiday.
Too right. Bloc offer family rooms too – might be worth checking them out for your next getaway!
I prefer staying at hotels the night before flights as I find I can sleep so much more and we don’t have to worry about traffic or parking x
Same here. I live in Cardiff and so Gatwick is a good five-hour coach journey away from me. Can’t be dealing with that right before a long-haul flight!
We’ve never stayed in a hotel at an airport but I think the girls would absolutely love this . Nila loves watching aeroplanes
I loved watching them and I made a pretty cool hyperlapse video of the views.
I live fairly close to Gatwick so rarely need a hotel when flying from there, however, the next time I have a silly early flight I’m going to be sorely tempted to stay here. I’ll take anything that makes my life easier when travelling.
That must be very handy! I live in Cardiff and sadly, our airport tends to be fairly expensive to fly from and the routes are limited (although slowly improving).
We always opt to stay over at a hotel the night before we fly, although we haven’t flown from Gatwick as yet. I love the funky designs of these rooms so will be keeping them in mind for the future.
I visit the Caribbean quite often and lots of the flights go from Gatwick. I love staying here if I’m flying in the morning.
I absolutely love that shower! Whenever I travel for work and stay at a hotel, the shower is the bit I’m looking forward to the most
For me, it’s the bed and the views!
The hotel sounds not only well situated and convenient but also really nice. I need to check where we are going from this year as a hotel stay before we travel will help us get to the airport far more relaxed. Fingers crossed it’s Gatwick – it normally is.
I always stay here if I have an early morning flight – beats the journey from Cardiff.
I have seen this hotel many times as I flight 90% of EU flights with BA from there so now I am used to it but the traffic can be horrendous getting there and it would be nice to have a rest before you fly out.
Definitely. I live in Cardiff so it’s a long journey to Gatwick for me.
Wow, that actually looks really cool. What a fab experience and fun way to start a holiday, especially with an early morning flight.
Definitely – a great way to relax before you jet off!
I have a terrible phobia of flying, however if I did fly I would probably need the hotel stay to help make the stress of the experience easier to bare.
My mum is the same. I agree that it could help to take the stress away, but if you stay at Bloc, I’d advise choosing a room without a window as you might not enjoy seeing the runway!
I had no idea this hotel existed. I’ve spent many an evening at Gatwick staying in an off-airport hotel – those transfers in the morning are a pain. I’ll definitely consider this on my next journey.
Ah yes, it’s a gem! It’s so near to Departures and I love the rooms. Usually the cheapest hotel in the south terminal as well 🙂
