One of the most popular classic British snacks I can think of, the traditional Cornish pasty is difficult to resist. It’s often said that food tastes better when you eat it in the place it originates from, however, and no doubt the same can often be said for these golden slabs of puff pastry crammed with braising steak, diced swede, potato and onion. Luckily, however, if you’re in south Wales, you needn’t travel quite as far afield as Cornwall to find a traditional Cornish bakery.

Founded in 1860, Warrens Bakery has been operating for 160 years, originally borne out of a love story between the daughter of a local baker and the son of a farmer.
Warrens Bakery arrived in Cwmbran Centre last week and I was honoured to be invited to open the store by cutting the ribbon, as well as getting to share my thoughts on a pasty or two.

Traditional Cornish pasties
The traditional steak pasty is packed with tender chunks of steak in a rich, well-seasoned gravy, complete with the thick, crimped crust that authentic Cornish pasties are so well-known for.

Here I am enjoying a steak pasty along with franchisee owner, Haroon Ahmed. I’m not sure whether someone had made a joke or whether I was just really excited to taste one of these pasties!

Warrens Bakery aren’t afraid to turn away from tradition and experiment with bold new flavours, however. Take the Marmite and cheese pasty, for example – a mixture of diced potato, tangy Marmite and mature Cheddar makes for the ultimate comfort food Cornish pasty combo. Alternatively, opt for the roast pork and apple pasty for a seasonal twist.

Other recommendations
It’s not just Cornish pasties that Warrens Bakery are famous for either. This traditional Cornish bakery also offers a selection of freshly made sandwiches, hot breakfasts and jacket potatoes, alongside a selection of cakes and bakes, including several vegan and veggie options.

I can’t get enough of the crunchy, sweet meringues – they look irresistible and the taste certainly doesn’t disappoint!

For a festive pick-me-up in between Christmas shopping, tuck into a mince pie and custard pasty – believe me, it works!

If you’d rather keep it traditional, opt for a classic mince pie instead.

The bakery even has its very own brand of hand-cooked crisps, the Great British Crisp Company, including flavours inspired by popular British dishes like fish and chips, English breakfast, roast beef and horseradish, and even Cornish pasty.

With a 3 for 2 mix and match offer running on doughnuts and hot savoury goods throughout autumn, you could treat yourself to three different products from as little as £2.60. At that price, you can afford to stock-up!
Where to find Warrens Bakery
Find Warrens Bakery in the Mall at Cwmbran Centre, near Boots, open from 8am until 6pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9am until 5pm on Sundays. A second branch of the bakery in Wales can be found in Merthyr Tydfil.
Warrens Bakery has stores dotted throughout the UK. Find your nearest Warrens Bakery here.

They’re delicious, aren’t they? I can’t get enough of Warren’s Bakery Cornish pasties.
Cornish pasties have a special place in my heart as my relatives were Cornish. My gran used to make her own pasties which were the size of a plate. I can’t wait to try Warrens. Did you spot a saffron cake?
They bring back nostalgic memories for me too. I don’t think I saw a saffron cake – what’s that?
I absolutely love Cornish pasties , but definitely wouldn’t say no to mince pies and custard desserts for afters! 🙂
Same here. Can’t beat a bit of tradition but I love trying out new things too.
The bakery sounds really lovely and who doesn’t enjoy a pastie.? All the cakes look delicious too and very delectable.
It was so busy, they were selling out of some products within a couple of hours of opening. Very reasonably priced too, which helps a lot.
