With Christmas just around the corner, many Brits are preparing to trade in traditional holiday gatherings for the excitement of travel. In fact, according to recent surveys, over 4 million UK residents travel abroad during the Christmas season, drawn to destinations both near and far. Whether it’s the allure of a sunny escape or the desire to experience festive traditions from other cultures, celebrating the festive period abroad offers a unique and memorable adventure in comparison to Christmas in Britain.
But, how can you keep the festive spirit alive when you’re far from home? The key is to blend familiar traditions with new experiences, while finding creative ways to stay connected with loved ones and immerse yourself in the holiday atmosphere wherever you go. Having spent Christmas Day in the Algarve back in 2016 (here’s me below!), here are my tips on how to turn your Christmas travels into an unforgettable adventure.

Embrace local holiday traditions
One of the most exciting aspects of travelling during Christmas is discovering the many different holiday traditions around the world. From sipping mulled wine at Germany’s bustling Christmas markets to taking part in Japan’s “KFC for Christmas” tradition, each country offers its own unique take on the festive season.
Engaging with these local customs not only adds depth to your travel experience, but also gives you the chance to celebrate in ways you may never have imagined. Join community events, take part in parades, or visit local churches to experience the festive spirit first-hand. It’s a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the culture, and create special memories that blend local traditions with your own.
That said, remember to take a few practical home comforts with you too. Think chocolate advent calendars (as long as they won’t melt!), Christmas Eve stockings and, of course, your Christmas jumper.
Virtual celebrations with family back home
Just because you’re thousands of miles away, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on spending time with your family. Thanks to today’s technology, staying connected is easier than ever. Use video calls to share Christmas moments in real-time, whether it’s opening presents together or cooking a favourite family dish simultaneously from different parts of the world.
To add a personal touch, send a festive ecard. I’ve previously sent Christmas eCards by Punchbowl which offers free and customisable options perfect for spreading holiday cheer. You can also surprise your family with e-gift cards or personalised video messages, ensuring that despite the distance, the connection remains strong and heartfelt.
Find festive events abroad
Just because you’re on the move doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the communal joy of Christmas. Many places – especially popular holiday destinations – host festive events like Christmas markets, open-air concerts, and charity events, often bringing together expats, locals, and fellow travellers to celebrate. These gatherings offer a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, share holiday cheer, and experience the festive spirit in a new setting.
Local Christmas markets are especially fun, filled with seasonal treats, handmade crafts, and twinkling lights. By joining in, you not only get a taste of local holiday traditions but also create lasting memories and forge new friendships along the way.
Blend familiar traditions with new experiences
One of the best ways to make Christmas feel special while travelling is to combine your favourite home traditions with the excitement of new experiences. Imagine decorating a Christmas tree in a tropical setting, or cosying up with a classic holiday film after a day spent exploring Europe’s winter festivities.
You can even incorporate local ingredients into your festive feast. Cooking a traditional Christmas dish using locally sourced produce or spices adds a new twist to an old favourite. This blend of the familiar and the novel creates a rich and meaningful celebration that reflects both your journey and the essence of the season.
Decorate your travel accommodation
Turning your temporary accommodation into a festive retreat doesn’t take much effort. A few simple touches can instantly bring the holiday spirit to life. Hang some fairy lights for a warm glow, create DIY ornaments using local materials, or display souvenirs you’ve collected on your travels with a festive twist.
These small decorations make your space feel more like home and help you embrace the magic of the season, no matter where you are. Personalising your décor with local elements also serves as a reminder of your journey and adds a unique flair to your celebrations.
Budget-friendly festive fun
Travelling over Christmas doesn’t have to be expensive. Many cities and towns host free or low-cost holiday events, such as light displays, outdoor concerts, or festive markets. Take advantage of these to soak up the Christmas atmosphere without overspending. Seasonal street food is another great way to enjoy the festivities without breaking the bank. And, if you don’t fancy travelling abroad for Christmas, make the most of those cosy Christmas vibes closer to home at the likes of Lapland UK in Manchester or Ascot.
For a personal touch, consider crafting your own gifts from materials you’ve gathered along the way. Handmade photo albums filled with highlights from your travels make for meaningful, budget-friendly presents that loved ones will cherish.
Plan a festive feast on the go
Adapting your holiday feast to local flavours can turn your Christmas meal into a culinary adventure. Visit local markets for inspiration, and create a menu that combines traditional festive dishes with local ingredients. You might add a dash of Thai spices to your stuffing or swap out British cheddar for creamy French brie. If you’re travelling with others, organising a potluck-style meal ensures a diverse and delicious spread, filled with the warmth and companionship that make Christmas meals so special.
Lightweight, meaningful gifts
When it comes to gifting while travelling, it’s all about keeping it light and meaningful. Handwritten letters, local treats like regional snacks or spices, or practical items such as foldable tote bags make thoughtful presents without adding bulk to your luggage. You could also consider digital gifts, such as eBooks, or music app subscriptions, which offer lasting enjoyment without taking up any physical space.
By keeping things simple and thoughtful, you can share the joy of the season with loved ones while staying true to your traveller’s lifestyle.
