If you’ve ever found yourself stuck at the airport during a layover, it’s time to rethink how you spend that downtime. A layover doesn’t have to mean hours spent aimlessly wandering around the terminal – especially if you’re in New York. As the city that never sleeps, NYC is bursting with experiences waiting to be squeezed into your stopover. Whether you’ve got a few hours to kill or an entire day to spare, here’s how to make the most of your layover in the Big Apple.

5 things to do during a New York layover
There’s no shortage of things to do in New York, even if you’re just passing through. With so many sights and activities to choose from, it can be overwhelming to work out what you can comfortably fit into your layover.
Here are some of my favourite ways to kill a few hours in New York.
Book an hourly hotel room
If your layover has left you in need of a quick break, an hourly hotel could be the answer. These rooms are available to book for just a few hours, offering all the comforts of a regular hotel without the overnight commitment or cost.
Whether you want to rest, freshen up, catch up on emails or just enjoy some peace and quiet away from the terminal, hourly hotels platforms like DayUse make it easy to find a room nearby – often at up to 75% less than standard rates. You can even treat it as a temporary base, leaving your luggage there while you explore the city.
Explore the city
If your layover is at least six hours long and you’re flying into JFK or LaGuardia, you’ve got just enough time to escape the airport and experience a taste of New York. Take a taxi, rideshare, or AirTrain/subway combo into Manhattan (allow around 60–90 minutes each way depending on traffic), dip briefly into the Bronx if you’re landing at LaGuardia, or explore the city from the water with trusted boat rental nyc options.
Once you’re in the city, head to Times Square for a quick photo op and some classic NYC buzz – it’s free, iconic, and open 24/7. From there, stroll to Bryant Park or up to Rockefeller Center for skyline views. For something a little more scenic, take a walk along The High Line, a former elevated railway turned urban park (also free, and around 1.5 miles long).
Just be mindful of how long it takes to get back through airport security – ideally, aim to be back at your terminal at least two hours before your next flight.
Enjoy some food
New York is not only one of the best restaurant cities in the US, but one of the world’s most exciting food cities, offering everything from street cart eats to upscale dining. If you’re short on time, head to Mamouns Falafel in Greenwich Village for a fast, flavour-packed meal from one of the city’s oldest Middle Eastern spots.
Craving something sweet? Head to Levain Bakery (with locations in NoHo and the Upper West Side) for thick, gooey cookies that went viral for good reason. If you’re near Koreatown, grab a bite from Her Name Is Han, a cosy, independent spot serving homestyle comfort food like Korean corn dogs, tteokbokki and kimbap.

Take a museum tour
Art lovers and culture buffs won’t be short of options, even with limited time. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and American Museum of Natural History are among the world’s top institutions, each offering highlights you can take in within an hour or two. All are relatively easy to reach from Manhattan, making them a smart pick if your layover allows for a few hours in the city.
Go shopping
If retail therapy is your thing, New York delivers in spades. From luxury labels on Fifth Avenue to quirky vintage finds in SoHo or Brooklyn Flea, there’s something for every taste and budget. Short on time? Stick to one shopping district to make the most of your visit without rushing from place to place.
Soak up some entertainment
Got a few hours to spare? Dive into New York’s legendary entertainment scene. Catch a matinee on Broadway, pop into an intimate comedy club, or unwind with live jazz in a tucked-away bar. If your layover extends into the evening, you’ll find plenty of venues open late and buzzing with energy.
Whether your layover lasts just a few hours or most of the day, New York City offers endless ways to escape the terminal and turn a stopover into a story worth telling.
