Last month, I reviewed a takeaway I ordered from Bagel and Burger Kitchen on Salisbury Road in Cathays, Cardiff – just one of many burger bars that have taken the city by storm over the past year or so.

The restaurant was set up around a year ago by brothers Imran and Shamim (otherwise known by his DJ name, Mista Bibs). Their father, Iftekhar Haris owns Caribbean restaurant, Irie Shack which has branches in both Cathays and Cardiff Bay (here’s my Irie Shack review).

I finally got round to visiting Bagel and Burger Kitchen for myself a couple of weeks ago with my housemate, James.

Inside, the restaurant is fairly small, with a rustic tiled floor and brick fireplace, making for an intimate dining atmosphere.

The menu includes a range of gourmet burger and bagel options, including classic hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken burgers and veggie burgers, alongside a range of specials including the Juicy Lucy (a beef patty stuffed with cheese and any extras of your choice, £6.95) and the Nuclear Naga (a beef, chicken or veggie burger topped with homemade naga chilli relish, £5.95). In addition, there are a range of sides and extras available to choose from.

You definitely get more bang for your buck than you do at most of Cardiff’s other burger bars, with all bagels and the most classic burgers priced under a fiver.

We both ordered Meal Deal 1, which lets you add skin-on fries, homemade slaw, dip of your choice and a canned soft drink, coffee or tea to any bagel or burger order for £2 extra. For £1 extra, you can swap the skin-on fries for sweet potato fries or ‘dirty’ fries.

I was very curious about the Krispy Kreme burger after writing it about it in my previous review of Bagel and Burger Kitchen, so I ordered it with dirty fries and a can of Apple Tango.

A thick, well-seasoned beef patty was topped with melted American cheese, relish, iceberg lettuce, sliced red onion and fresh tomato, all wedged between a sweet-glazed Krispy Kreme ring donut. It was an interesting combination, to say the least. The sweetness of the donut contrasted well with the rich, meaty beef patty, while the slight crispiness of the glazed coating added texture to the burger. However, the juices from the burger soaked into the bottom of the donut and it became quite flat; putting the lettuce below the patty to absorb some of the moisture might help with this.

I’m not sure I’d order the Krispy Kreme burger again as I usually stick to a chicken burger with cheese or a plain cheeseburger, but I did enjoy it. I definitely recommend trying it out at least once to see what you think of it (just try not to think about all those calories!)

The dirty fries consisted of crispy, skin-on fries topped with a spicy tomato and onion sauce, mounds of melted cheddar cheese and fiery jalapenos. These were absolutely delicious and well worth an extra £1 in place of standard fries, but if you can’t handle spicy food then don’t order these.

The only thing that would’ve made the dirty fries taste better would be if they were served with more of a pico de gallo-style salsa as opposed to a sauce, as the fries got a little soggy towards the end (although this still didn’t stop me from devouring them all!)

My burger was also served with an aromatic garlic mayo dip and crunchy, homemade coleslaw. These were very tasty, but the portions could’ve done with being a touch bigger.

Meanwhile, James ordered the Smokey BBQ burger, also with dirty fries, a can of Apple Tango, dip and coleslaw. The burger was served in a giant brioche bap, consisting of a grilled chicken fillet burger topped with melted American cheese, BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomato and red onion. It looked very appetising and James commented that the chicken was tender and succulent, while the melted cheese and BBQ sauce were a great match. I would be tempted to order this myself next time I visit Bagel and Burger Kitchen.

I was pretty impressed by my first visit to Bagel and Burger Kitchen and I would definitely go back in future, although as it is a bit of a walk from my house I will probably stick to ordering by takeaway through Deliveroo. I’m looking forward to trying out the bagels; the salt beef bagel has my name all over it!

I was invited to Bagel and Burger Kitchen as a guest and our food and drinks were provided complimentary. However, I was not obliged to write a positive review.

Would you eat a Krispy Kreme burger, or should donuts and burgers never mix? Let me know your thoughts in the comment box below 🙂
