The story behind The Black Market

The Black Market was set up by local chef and burlesque fan, Romy Alford in 2021 as a platform through which to sell her homemade vegan, zero-waste chutneys, jams, preserves, cereal toppers and breakfast hampers at local festivals and markets, and through her online shop.

Now, the business is expanding as a new Brighton-based burlesque night showcasing premier local performers and artists, with an online bespoke burlesque event booking platform set to follow.

The business takes both its name, and its inspiration, from the underground, ‘black’ markets of World War Two, which sprang up and brought communities together to shop for items that weren’t available in mainstream markets.

Dedicated to supporting local businesses and economy, all products made, or sold by The Black Market, are 100% allergen-free, handmade and sourced from local farmers, producers and artisan makers.

Wherever possible, goods sourced will be seasonal and sustainable (in keeping with the World War Two ‘Dig For Victory’ slogan) and, in line with the concept of ‘Make Do & Mend’, all food served at The Black Market’s events will be prepared according to a zero-waste policy, with an eco-friendly, recyclable packaging policy in place.

Furthermore, to recognise and reward the efforts of local service men and women throughout history, The Black Market will be offering discounts to those working in the public services or armed forces.
