When we’re not feeling at our best, comfort food is a must. But, what exactly do we mean when we talk about comfort food?

Comfort food is a term used to describe food that provides us with a sense of wellbeing or comfort, perhaps due to the memories that the taste, texture, appearance, or even the smell of the food tends to invoke. For many of us, comfort foods can be a real source of comfort and reassurance during times of need.

Although it’s not a hard and fast rule, most comfort foods tend to be high in calories and fat, as they’re usually designed to provide a quick energy source.

Does feel-good comfort actually do good?

We all have our go-to comfort foods. Whether it’s a warm bowl of chicken soup or a slice of your Mum’s homemade apple pie, comfort food makes us feel better, both emotionally and physically.

And it turns out, there’s a scientific reason behind this. As many comfort foods contain high levels of carbohydrates – which increase serotonin levels in the brain – eating them can help to bring about feelings of relaxation and happiness.

In addition, comfort food is often high in fat, which helps to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates and prolongs the effects of serotonin in our bodies.

Delicious dry-aged meat

Dry aged meat has been becoming more popular in recent years. Dry-aged meat is beef aged for an extended period – usually between 21 and 28 days, resulting in a more rounded flavour. Of course, like all meat, it’s also a good source of protein, making it a nutritious option for those looking for healthy comfort foods to enjoy.

My favourite ways to use dry-aged meat are in steak dinners, homemade burgers and Italian ragus, although the possibilities are almost endless. If you happen to have a roaring log fire and a glass of wine to enjoy alongside your meal, even better!

There’s no need to spend a fortune on an elaborate meal; sometimes, the simplest dishes are the best. With dry aged meat, you can create a cosy night in you’ll never forget!

Classic Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s Pie is classic comfort food that’s been with us for centuries. Not only is this dish simple to make, but it’s a great way to use up leftover meat and vegetables, and the leftovers are just as delicious as the original dish.

The key to a good Shepherd’s Pie is in the filling. Both the meat and vegetables should be cooked until tender, and the filling should be seasoned well with herbs and spices. Once you’ve made the filling, all you need to do is assemble the pie, layering mashed potato on top of the meat mixture, and bake it in your oven until ready to eat.

Homemade cookies

There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked cookies wafting through your house for that feel-good feeling. And, when it comes to comfort food, few foods can compete with a warm, gooey cookie straight out of the oven.

It’s thought that one of the reasons we enjoy eating homemade cookies, can be linked to the simple act of baking itself. Measuring, mixing, and shaping dough is strangely therapeutic, and the result is (almost) always worth the effort.

For me, however, it’s the nostalgia factor that makes baking cookies feel so special. After all, so many of us will have fond memories of baking cookies with their mother or grandmother.

So, when you feel stressed or down, bake a batch of your favourite cookie – chances are, you’ll feel better in no time.

Hearty soup

If you’re looking for delicious and comforting food that’s easy to make, look no further than homemade soup.

Eating hot soup when you’re feeling under the weather is very soothing. The warmth can help to relax your muscles and ease congestion, and the soup’s steam can help to open up your sinuses.

Soup is also packed with nutrients, so it’s a great way to refuel your body when you’re feeling run down. Plus, it’s absolutely delicious. Whether you’re going to go all out and rustle up a hearty beef stew, or perhaps just keep things simple with a light vegetable soup, you’re bound to find a recipe that’ll hit the spot.

Indulgent hot chocolate

Few things are more comforting than a mug of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day. The rich, chocolatey flavour and the warmth of the drink can chase away the chill and make even the dreariest day feel a little brighter. And when you top hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream, it becomes a truly indulgent treat.

The fluffy marshmallows melt in your mouth, while the creamy whipped cream adds a touch of sweetness. It’s the perfect way to curl up with a good book and relax. So, next time you’re looking for comfort food, reach for a mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream.

So, whether you’re craving a steaming hot bowl of soup to warm you up on a cold evening, or perhaps you’re peckish for a cookie or two to sweeten up a slow Monday, reach for your favourite comfort food recipe and you’ll be feeling better in no time!
