Earlier this month, a vegan celebration cake launched in UK supermarkets for the first time and it’s been flying off the shelves ever since. What’s more, it’s made in Wales!

The UK’s first vegan celebration cake is sold by Just Love Food Company, based in Blackwood in the South Wales Valleys. Celebrating its 9th birthday this month, this family food business already has a sweet reputation for its nut- and gluten-free celebration cakes, having been the first UK celebration cake manufacturer to go “nut-free” back in 2010.

Taste-testing the UK’s first vegan celebration cake

When Just Love Food Company asked if I’d be interested in tasting their new vegan celebration cake for myself, I jumped at the opportunity – especially when I heard it’s a chocolate cake!

100% egg- and milk-free, this cake has earned the seal of approval of the Vegan Society. A chocolate sponge is elegantly sandwiched together and covered with a chocolate frosting, topped with golden dark chocolate drops.

As this cake doesn’t contain egg, I’m expecting it to be quite dense and heavy, but this couldn’t be further from the case. Instead, I find my teeth gliding through soft, aerated layers of rich chocolate sponge. Every single crumb stands out from the rest.

Measuring six inches in diameter, the cake serves up to eight people, making it ideal for special occasions. Most of Just Love Food Company’s cakes have a shelf life of over 30 days, so in the unlikely event they don’t get eaten up straight away, they’ll keep fresh in the box or in an airtight container for a good few weeks.

Just Love Food Company’s chocolate vegan celebration cake can be found in Asda stores UK-wide, retailing at £6/488g.

Gluten-free celebration cake

I’ve also been lucky enough to sample some of Just Love Food Company’s gluten-free chocolate celebration cake and I’m really taken aback by how moist and fluffy it is.

With a neutral design and simple ‘Let’s Celebrate’ slogan, it’s the perfect celebration cake for coeliacs, no matter what the occasion may be.

Just Love Food Company’s gluten-free celebration cake is sold in Asda stores UK-wide, with an RRP of £6/579g. Meanwhile, Tesco, Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s sell the cake with their own branding.

The story behind Just Love Food Company

In 2009, Caerphilly-based father-of-three, Mike Woods set up Just Love Food Company after he and his wife Karen struggled to source suitable celebration cakes in UK supermarkets for their children, two of whom have severe nut allergies. With first-hand experience of the reality behind living with allergies and over 20 years’ experience in food manufacturing, Mike saw a gap in the market for allergy-friendly celebration cakes.

A year later, Mike approached Sainsbury’s with his idea, eventually resulting in the launch of two initial products, including a monster cake and a princess cake.

The first nut-free celebration cakes to hit UK shelves

In 2010, Just Love Food Company’s nut-free celebration cakes launched in the ‘big four’ UK supermarkets: Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons.

Although you won’t find nuts listed as an ingredient in most cakes, they usually come with a nut allergy warning because they’ve been made in an environment which also produces nut-based products. This means it’s incredibly difficult to say for sure that such cakes don’t contain any traces of nuts.

Just Love Food Company’s cakes are not only 100% nut-free, they’re also produced in a factory that has never – and will never – process nuts. In fact, staff and site visitors are strictly forbidden to even bring nuts on-site. Furthermore, all of the ingredients used in Just Love Food Company’s cakes are sourced from suppliers who don’t handle any nuts, and every single step of the product journey is risk-assessed to ensure no nut contamination occurs.

Milk-, gluten- and wheat-free cakes

Mike knew he couldn’t stop at nut-free cakes. Noticing a demand for celebration cakes for people with different food allergies, in 2016, Mike went ahead and expanded his free-from cake range to include nut-free cakes that are also either milk-free, gluten-free or wheat-free.

Today, you’ll find these cakes sitting on the shelves in the Free From sections in the very same retailers listed above, with both Just Love Food Company and retailer ‘own-label’ branding.

They’d make for an extremely thoughtful present to give to a vegan friend or family member for a birthday or special occasion. For more gifting inspiration, check out this vegan gift guide!

Rebranding with vegan celebration cake

The latest vegan celebration cake launch sees Just Love Food Company undergo somewhat of a rebrand, moving from catering for food allergies and intolerances, into the meat-free market. This shift follows customer requests for egg-, milk- and, of course, nut-free cakes.

What’s next?

Looking to the future, Just Love Food Company plans to continue developing its free-from product range and offering options for as many different allergies as possible. If you’ve got a specific allergy and struggle to find products to suit you, why not get in touch and let them know?

You can find Just Love Food Company’s cakes in the Free From sections of Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, although the vegan celebration cake is only available in Asda and Sainsbury’s. Read more at www.justlovefoodcompany.com.
