When we picture our dream holiday, we often imagine jetting off to sun, sea and sand, without giving much thought to taking a break in the UK. However, the UK actually has lots of great vacation options to consider, whether you’re planning a staycation to save some money, reduce the need to fly or just want to explore somewhere closer to home. Here are a few reasons to consider staying in the UK for your next holiday.
No need to fly
If you’re trying to lessen your impact on the environment and travel more ethically, staying in the UK is a great option. Without flying, you’re immediately travelling in a greener way. If you’re taking a UK break, make travel even greener by travelling by train, or booking with a company like Just Go! Holidays. These companies book coach tours and train travel to various destinations all over the country, from filming locations to Christmas markets.
You’ll also be able to enjoy a much calmer start to your trip, without the need to get up at the crack of dawn to get to the airport and stand in long security queues. There’ll be no need to worry about sorting out passports for the family or having any vaccinations before you travel, either. Say no to budget flights with uncomfortable seats and instead, start your holiday feeling totally relaxed.
There’s more to see than you think
What kind of holiday do you usually enjoy? You might be able to find something similar in the UK, enabling you to experience more of what your home country has to offer.
Love the beach? Check out some of the UK’s most beautiful beaches in Cornwall and the South West. Like a city break? Try a city you’ve never been to before like Cardiff, York or Edinburgh for shopping, food and culture experiences. If you’re interested in history, the UK has many interesting places for you to visit, with highlights including the Stonehenge near Salisbury, the Roman Baths in Bath Spa and Blenheim Palace in Woodstock.

Less travel restrictions
If you’re travelling as a family, you’ll know what a nightmare it can be to pack everything you’ll need, while adhering to strict luggage allowances. If you’re staying in the UK, the only luggage restriction is what you can fit in the boot of the car.
If you usually worry about who’ll look after the dog or feed the hamster while you’re away, you can rest assured that you’ll be able to take them with you on a UK trip. There are many pet-friendly hotels and holiday lets available, meaning you can bring your furry family members with you so you can watch them yourself. Less worry, less stress for them and no costs for kennels, boarding or pet-sitting.
If you don’t have much holiday leave remaining, a UK break is ideal. With much less travel time involved, you don’t need to worry about wasting half your holiday travelling if you can only get away for a few days.
It can be easier with small children
If you have small children, travelling abroad can be difficult. With a UK break, there are a lot less challenges. Taking a toddler on a flight can be a nightmare, between keeping them entertained and dreading the inevitable toddler meltdown.
If you’re in the UK, you can drive to your destination and take as many breaks along the trip as you need for your kids to get out, stretch their legs and take a break from the car. Make it part of the trip, and find somewhere interesting to visit along the way. Even if you just stop at a great looking cafe on the way, it helps to break up the trip.
Everything can be simpler
By staying in the UK, you’ll already know how everything works. You already speak the language, which means you can order in restaurants with no confusion and you don’t have to watch hotel entertainment being repeated in several different languages.
You already know how money works, so you’ll know exactly how much you’ve spent, without trying to do the conversions in your head on the spot.
There are no differences in the road system to get used to either, so you’re less likely to have an accident caused by the confusion of driving on the wrong side of the road.
A trip in the UK can be just as fun as a trip abroad, and has the added bonus of supporting the UK economy. It’s a win all round!

Even though we’d be flying across the pond, I would love for our family to go to the UK for a vacation. There is so much awesome stuff to check out and places to visit.
I bet you’d have a great time. There’s a lot to see and do here, even if the weather isn’t always up to scratch.
So glad to read that there are more pet-friendly hotels in the U.K. We’ve always had dogs and take them with us whenever we travel. It’s so much nicer to not have to worry about finding a place to stay! xx
Aww yes I’ve stayed in a few dog-friendly hotels. I love having them around
I love holidaying in the UK. My reasons are that it is often cheaper and also you can do something really last minute. Sure, you can book to go abroad last minute but then there’s all the extra stuff to consider that going abroad entails whereas with a UK holiday, you can just pack up the car and go.
That’s very true. I don’t drive but if I could, I bet I’d be taking staycations most weekends.
I do agree that it can be simpler. You can just get in your car and drive somewhere (if you drive) and you don’t have to worry too much about flight times and getting there in advance etc x
Yeah, I’m still learning to drive but once I’ve passed, I’ll be exploring the UK a lot more often.
We tend to travel within the UK more and more with the children. There is so much to see in our doorstep that we don’t feel that we need to travel elsewhere
I don’t blame you; the cost of flights can really add up when you’re travelling as a family!
It would be nice to go on a holiday with the family in UK someday but for now I’m just gonna stay here in our place and wait for my 2nd child to come into this world.
What an exciting time for you! I’m sure you’ll have some lovely UK family holidays to look forward to in the future.
We love exploring the UK as there is so much to see and do. Our favourites so far are Northern Ireland, Scotland and Snowdonia
I haven’t been to Scotland or Snowdonia yet, but I have been to Belfast.
