Sailing down the iconic Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo en route to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, imagine my excitement when I heard the formidable sound of elephants trumpeting out from the towering trees and leafy ferns that line the river bank. Edging a little closer to land while maintaining a safe distance between us, we gazed in silent admiration as a herd of endangered Borneo pygmy elephants stampeded past, eager to catch a glimpse of them peeking through the trees.

Seeing Borneo pygmy elephants in the wild during my recent visit to Sabah is one of my most awe-inspiring travel memories to-date. Only around 1,500 Borneo pygmies are thought to remain and we were incredibly lucky to spot a herd for ourselves!

When independent jeweller, Jana Reinhardt got in touch shortly after my trip to ask if I’d like to host a reader giveaway for one of their sterling silver elephant necklaces, it couldn’t have been better timing!

Why is this elephant necklace so special?

A symbol of commitment, strength and patience, the elephant spirit animal is known for its confidence, compassion and ability to overcome obstacles. As elephants are among the most intelligent animals alive – defensive when faced with a need to protect others, yet gentle when nurturing them – they can symbolise kindness and communication in our relationships with our friends, our families and our partners.

According to the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui, elephants with their trunks facing upwards represent wealth, luck and achievement. Jana therefore opted to fashion her elephants in this pose when designing her elephant pendant.

Part of Jana Reinhardt’s ‘Out of Africa’ collection, this 925 sterling silver elephant pendant features a hand-crafted 18 x 14mm elephant suspended from a subtle 1.2mm fine trace chain, adjustable to either 16″ / 18″ (41 / 46cm) or 20″ / 22″ (51cm / 56cm) and fastened with a 5mm spring ring. Each necklace is presented in a sleek presentation box like the one you see above.

Alternative designs and engraving options

Besides 925 sterling silver, Jana Reinhardt also sell their iconic elephant necklace in 22ct Vermeil Gold, 18ct Vermeil Rose/Pink, 9ct Yellow Gold, 9ct White Gold, 9ct Rose Gold, 18ct Yellow Gold, 18ct White Gold, 18ct Rose Gold or Platinum, with prices ranging from £135 to £1,085. For an additional £15, you can choose to have the back of the elephant engraved with up to three characters, making for a truly thoughtful gift.

Treat yourself (or someone else) and support endangered orangutans

What I love about this elephant necklace

When I wear Jana Reinhardt’s elephant necklace, I’m transported back to my time in Borneo. I can almost hear those beautiful Borneo pygmies teasing us with their playful trumpeting as they hide behind the foliage along the banks of the Kinabatangan River. I remember how desperately we tried to capture the perfect image before they disappeared into the depths of the rainforest. Wearing this pendant reminds me of one of the most special experiences I’ve ever had!

  9. I love birds and keep a list of all the bird species I’ve seen in the UK. I would love to see a white-tailed eagle or a white stork, both of which now breed here.

  12. I love elephants, I was lucky we was just walking up to see them at a zoo in fueteventura and the spanish zoo keeper let us feed them even though he didn’t speak English.

  22. I would love to see giraffes. They are such elegant creatures, I’d love to watch them nibble the tall trees and leaves with their long necks and gorgeous legs.

  61. I would love to see a Pinemartin. They live in the north of Scotland where I visit quite a bit, but have only managed to catch a fleeting glimpse of this wonderful animal. I just think they are so beautiful and so resourceful.

  70. There’s so many but I’d love to see a thorny devil lizard in Australia because I have handled them in captivity but would love to study them in the wild. They are so cute and unusual.

  71. I saw an elephant in India it was a dream come true, you can almost feel the power in them. My heart skipped a beat an experience I will never forget. He was spiritually beautiful. The best Animal in the whole world. To win this necklace would just as spiritually amazing as he was to me.

  73. Otters. I love these social fun loving animals love to watch them playing with stones and other otter, teaching little ones how to swim etc in zoos and safari parks would love to see that in the wild.

  91. They all look amazing. The Proboscis Monkey’s look hilarious but the Elephant’s would be great to see in their own environment. It’s a shame they can’t be left in peace

  99. I would love to see a Scottish wildcat. They are so rare and very beautiful. You wouldn’t want to stroke one though as thy are very fierce.

    • My sister loves meerkats too! Sorry to hear that, I haven’t had any other reports of glitches with the widget so I’m not sure what has caused that.
