After spending over a year stuck at home over lockdown, we now find ourselves gazing out of our windows at the pouring rain, praying for the sunshine to return. With a bit of luck, though it looks like things are starting to look-up; according to the recent weather forecast, we should be in for a heatwave within the next week or so!
With the warm weather almost upon us, no doubt we’ll be wanting to make the most of it while it lasts. So, use any spare time you might have in between the showers now to refresh your garden so it’ll be ready for all those barbecues and garden parties.
Injecting a splash of colour into your garden can be a great way to transform the look of your outdoors space without breaking the bank. I really got into gardening during lockdown and while I didn’t have a huge budget to spend, I managed to make my garden look much more pleasant just by adding a burst of colour.

Here are three wonderful ways to add colour to your garden:
Add colourful plants
Adding colourful plants to your garden is one of the easiest ways to make an outdoor space stand out. Not only will plants add colour, but they’ll also create a sensory experience for you to enjoy. Play around with different hues and combine your favourite scented plants to create the perfect outdoor space.
The Handy Squad, handyman services, says “[Don’t] let your creativity stop at the flowers – you can experiment with different plant pots too! Say goodbye to classic orange terracotta and hello to colourful, wooden or patterned ceramic pots. Visit your local garden centre for inspiration or paint an old pot yourself.”
You might have a small garden, a large garden or maybe no garden at all, perhaps just a patio or balcony. For those with little space for plant pots, Livingetc recommends getting creative, perhaps by “making a vertical garden, perfect for bringing a touch of life to an empty or tired wall.”

Get the paintbrush out
Choose your favourite colours, get a paintbrush and start painting away. You can paint your outdoor walls, garden shed, garden fence or anything else you’d like. As the Incidental Parents mentions in this blog post, if your garden fence is looking old or dull, it might be time to gloss it again.
Be creative with paint by using masking tape to create unique patterns – paint between the lines to make your outdoors look trendier than ever! According to Motherhood, The Real Deal, “Colour can evoke certain emotions and moods, so choosing both the right colours is essential.”
If your goal is to have calming and relaxing tones in your garden, you should opt for blue and green hues.

Decorate with outdoor wall art
Did you think wall art was for indoor walls only? It’s time to take wall art outdoors. As this article on The Spruce says, decorating your outdoor walls can help to make your al fresco space feel all the more welcoming.
They share outdoor wall art ideas that could look perfect in any garden, from custom signage and feature walls to natural greenery and outdoor statement pieces. This could make for a great talking point at this summer’s garden parties!
