Santorini, Greece – sunsets and sea views

Santorini is an iconic island filled with perfect, white-washed houses perched on high cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea. Wherever you go on the island, you’re pretty much guaranteed stunning views and romantic sunsets. You could head to one of many local restaurants, experience traditional Greek food like fresh seafood and crisp Assyrtiko wine, and propose just as the sun sinks and the light softens.

Cappadocia, Turkey – hot air balloons above fairy chimneys

If you’re after something that feels completely out of this world, then the surreal, sweeping terrain of Cappadocia offers a stage like no other. Imagine rising up in a hot-air balloon as the sun begins to rise and peering out to see the most breathtaking view, including other balloons in the distance. After the flight (and the proposal!), you could celebrate with a traditional Turkish breakfast and reflect on the experience. Just be sure to book your balloon ride early and try to secure the first flight of the day, when dawn breaks.

Lake Como, Italy – elegance beside the water

For those who appreciate refined beauty and timeless grace, Lake Como is an exceptional choice. The placid waters, the luxurious villas, and the promise of a genuine Italian escape create a proposal that’s chic, yet personal. You could take a private boat cruise around the lake, or pop the question among the fragrant gardens of a lakeside villa with a glass of chilled Prosecco in hand. However you choose to do it, Lake Como promises a beautiful backdrop.

Kyoto, Japan – serenity and seasonal beauty

If you prefer something quieter, more reflective, and cultural, the city of Kyoto offers a deeply romantic alternative destination. Its historic temples, tranquil rock gardens, and the infamous cherry blossom trees offer profound beauty that’s hard to beat. You could plan your moment along the famous Philosopher’s Path, or on the terrace of a peaceful temple.

If you do want to involve and experience the Sakura (cherry blossom season), you’ll need to carefully time your trip. The trees tend to bloom around late March to early April, so aim for a date around then.

Wherever you choose, make it about you as a couple. Choose a location that encapsulates who you are and the things you love. You’ve picked the ring, now you pick the moment.

If you could propose to your loved one anywhere in the world, where would you pick? Leave a comment below to let me know.
