Sometimes, we might choose our holiday destinations based on a single attraction or landmark we’ve always wanted to see for ourselves. Other times, however, we’ll book the cheapest ticket we can find to anywhere. Even if we already have a plan in mind for our holiday, however, there will inevitably be gaps in your itinerary. Even the most detailed of plans can be improved with a little local insight or insider knowledge.
Poland is a popular travel destination at the moment, largely owing to its varied culture and tourist attractions, reasonable travel costs, and short journey times between the UK and Europe. With Poland being such a large country, however, you may be stuck on exactly where to go and what to do, especially if it’s your first time visiting.

Where are the best places to visit in Poland?
Krakow
Originally the capital of Poland, Krakow is a historical city with plenty to see and do. Make sure you explore the main market square and old town to really get a feel for the local culture. See the amazing St Mary’s Basilica, and marvel at the medieval architecture.
As for events, you’ll have the option to attend a variety of different shows and festivals if you time your visit right. Whether you like film, music or even literature, you’ll be likely to find an event that suits your tastes, although you might need to plan your trip in advance.
Auschwitz
There are lots of trips from Krakow to Auschwitz that make it really easy to visit this world-famous attraction.
A popular destination for dark history enthusiasts, or for anyone who wants to learn more about what happened during the Holocaust, Auschwitz is an unmissable part of Poland.
Understandably, some tourists may be nervous about visiting; after all, it’s not necessarily the easiest period in time to come face-to-face with. Still, it remains an incredibly enriching place where you can learn a lot about this historic tragedy in a respectful, reflective way.
Wieliczka
Not too far from Auschwitz lies the historic town of Wieliczka, perhaps best known for its salt mines. You can drive there from Krakow in one day, or take the train for a shorter journey. When you arrive, go for a walk around the town, visit the park and, of course, take a tour of the mines.
Plus, don’t forget to pay a visit to the nearby castle and discover how table salt was produced in the mines for centuries.
Tatra Mountains
If you want to do some outdoor activities when in Poland, there’s no better place than the Tatra Mountains.
Choose a hiking route to suit your skill level, or join a tour group to stay safe and avoid getting lost. You’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking views, and maybe even spot some wildlife.
Alternatively, if you’re visiting in the winter, you could try skiing. Even if you’ve never been skiing before, there are plenty of instructors who can show you the ropes and help you get started on the slopes.
Whatever you decide to do in Poland, make sure you book in advance in order to make the most of your trip, and plan for every eventuality. The last thing you want to do is arrive and realise you don’t have enough time to fit everything into your schedule. Do your research and prioritise the sights you absolutely must see.
