Travel is an adventure that knows no bounds. For many of us, exploring new destinations and experiencing life in different cultures – from gorging on local cuisine and sampling the local tipple, to exploring all the major tourist spots and stumbling across hidden gems – brings meaning and fulfilment to our lives.

No matter how good your memory is, however, it’s unlikely you’ll remember every last little detail of your trip as it unfolds. If you spend time thinking about how to document your travels before you leave, you’ll be eternally grateful to yourself upon your return.

Here are my top tips on how best to capture every stand-out travel moment, every rickety taxi ride and every turn you take down an unfamiliar street, not knowing where you’ll end up!

6 ways to document your travels

1) Carry a laptop with cloud storage

Fancy starting your own travel blog or trying your hand at travel writing? You’re probably going to need a lightweight laptop to take with you.

Unlike a physical notebook, a laptop gives you the chance to quickly jot down ideas, notes and reminders without having to write a full-blown diary entry. Another bonus of using a laptop is the internet connection, especially if you plan on uploading your photos and videos to cloud storage or using enterprise document management to share files with clients.

Rather than worry about losing all your work in the event of a lost USB drive, hard drive failure or any accidental spillages, you can rest assured knowing your data is stored safely and securely within the cloud. Read more about how to safely back-up your photos and data while travelling in my post about the most important things for travellers to know.

2) Take pictures – and get them printed!

While well-written words can make for an enchanting way to capture the essence of your adventure, the famous saying “a picture paints a thousand words” speaks volumes when it comes to documenting your travel adventures. While photo albums were the traditional way to store our photos, today, personalised photo books, online galleries and cloud storage have taken over.

Taking snapshots and photos of your adventures is the perfect way to capture the mood and moment of your trip. It’s also more convenient than whipping your notebook out wherever you are to describe a feeling that, more often than not, is fleeting and difficult to recall vividly if you happen to get distracted.

Photos help you to capture every last little detail of your trip and even if your memory fades in years to come, you’ll have the photos to look back on. Plus, as you can upload them to your favourite social media channels, you’ll be able to share your travel experiences with your friends and family from straight from your camera, laptop or mobile phone.

Don’t let your prized photos linger on your digital camera or hard drive, though; with so many online photo printing services available today, there’s absolutely no reason not to get them printed out and invest in a pretty frame to display them in.

3) Use a notebook

Although a laptop has its advantages over a notebook, the latter is arguably the most traditional way of documenting your travels, or any kind of memories for that matter. Those with a love for words often find great satisfaction in taking pen (or even pencil!) to paper; just take the likes of Kerouac or Orwell, for example – they always had a notebook close to hand!

With a tendency to be on the bulky-side and a risk of getting wet and soggy in the event of a change in the weather, notebooks aren’t always the most reliable or practical option, but they’re a beloved part of the travel experience nonetheless. Furthermore, they present a more personal way to document your experiences, especially if you never intend upon sharing your entries with anyone else.

4) Start a scrapbook

Scrapbooking isn’t for everybody, but those who do love to scrapbook really love to scrapbook! If you don’t mind hanging on to everything you happen to collect along your travels – from plane tickets to torn-off beer labels – this can be a superb way to ensure you’ll remember each step of your journey.

Besides sticking everything into a scrapbook at the end of your journey, you can also keep the memories fresh in your mind by scribbling the what, why, and where on the back of each item, so you’ll have a more precise reference if you want to go back and add little notes and musings under each souvenir.

5) Collect unique souvenirs

Another wonderful way to document your travels is by collecting thoughtful souvenirs that you can incorporate into your everyday life. Embroidered patches for jackets or bags, keyrings, or even charms for bracelets all capture memories in a tangible, meaningful way. Every time you see or use these mementos, they can bring a moment of joy, sparking memories of the places you’ve been and the experiences you’ve had. Opt for items that reflect the unique culture or style of the destination, adding a personal touch to your collection and a story to share.

6) Record some video

With the advent of smart phones and GoPros, recording your travels through video has never been easier. Much like photos, video evidence of where you’ve been is easy and convenient to capture, helping you to document some of the most stunning sights you encounter.

Perhaps the most appealing part of capturing video content is that, even once the trip is over, you can enjoy reliving all your most exciting travel memories. And, with a little help from a free online video editor or app, you can transform all your cherished video clips into a polished feature-length piece with added elements like animated travel videos, to reflect back on with your trip companions for years to come.

When I visited Agra back in 2016, my tour guide helped me to find a unique way of capturing the iconic image of the Taj Mahal in the reflection of my sunglasses.

Everyone has a different way of recording their travel memories and there’s no right or wrong way to document your experiences. It’s your adventure, so only you’ll know the best way to preserve each memorable moment so you can remember the stories of your favourite travel moments for years to come. However, you need to ensure you devote time to thinking about this before your trip; after all, when you arrive back home and you’re reflecting on what you got up to, you’ll want to know you’ve recorded your memories in the best way possible!
