Perched on my island, I sip on a fruity rum punch as I relish in the warming scent of bananas wafting through the air. All around me, wherever I look, the view is breathtakingly beautiful and everything looks so clean and untouched.

I can’t tell you how badly I long for my dream kitchen. When I picture myself in my dream kitchen on a Friday night. There I am, sitting around the ‘island’ in the centre of my sparkling clean, Instagram-worthy kitchen with friends, drinking our favourite cocktails while my banana bread bakes away in the oven.

A modern kitchen in shades of beige and cream

In reality, however, by the time Friday evening arrives, the kitchen desperately needs a good clean and inviting friends around is the last thing I want to do! Having previously written about the mental health benefits of a clean kitchen, I’ve often thought about hiring a professional cleaner to clean my kitchen every week (not to mention looking for upholstery cleaners near me to help me spruce up my dining room!)

As many of us are spending more time at home than usual and we’re understandably more concerned about hygiene and cleanliness, it could be a good time to think about hiring a kitchen cleaner. I thought it might be useful to share some of the things I’ve learnt from my experience, as no doubt this could be helpful to anyone else who, like me, is struggling to find time to clean at the end of a busy week.

Although I’ve put it off for now as I’m to focusing on learning to drive and saving more of my earnings, I’m surprised at how affordable it is. That said, I’ve also been pretty shocked by just how much there is to consider when I search for the best cleaners near me online.

5 things you need to know when looking for a kitchen cleaner

You might need a different kind of kitchen cleaner for deep cleaning

You might think that hiring someone to clean your kitchen is quite straight-forward and while you won’t struggle to find a cleaner who’s happy to mop the floor, sanitise the work surfaces and wash your dirty dishes, you might find that they’re more reluctant to deep clean your oven or clean the windows, for example.

For some kinds of kitchen cleaning, you’ll need to hire a specialist cleaner – especially if your oven is particularly dirty. Bear this in mind when looking for the right kind of cleaner for you.

You’ll need to plan in advance

When you consider hiring a domestic cleaner to help you clean your home, it’s essential that you plan effectively and think ahead. While you might be expecting your cleaner to turn up at short notice, many cleaners have regular clients and they work to fill their schedules. This means it can be difficult for secure an initial appointment and you might have to wait a few days.

With this in mind, aim to start calling around and booking appointments as early on as possible.

It pays to check out a few references

Once you know what kind of cleaner you need to hire and you’ve found a few potential candidates, it’s time to check out some references. If you’ve been referred to the cleaner by a friend or family member, this is always a good indicator that you they’re someone you can trust to do a good job.

In any case, however, you should ask cleaners to provide references from people who are currently using their cleaning services or have done so in the past.

Reading online reviews is a must

Whether you’re successful in obtaining references or not, it always pays to read a few online reviews too. Remember not to fall down Google’s rabbit hole while searching for your cleaner; all you need to do is carry out a quick search for “house cleaning (your city’s name)” and this will render you a long list of websites providing cleaning services in your area.

Once you find some reliable-looking cleaners, do some digging into their background and see if you can find any reviews about them online to help you gauge whether they’d be right for you.

You need to ask lots of questions

Once you’ve chosen one or two potential kitchen cleaners, it’s time to contact them. This can be a little daunting, but you should be able to feel welcome to ask questions about their skills and experience for the role.

You should also provide information to the candidate about your home and type of cleaning you require. Be sure to ask questions like:

  • How long have you been cleaning for?
  • What will happen if I cancel an agreed cleaning appointment? Will I be charged a cancellation fee?
  • What equipment and/or products do you use for your cleaning? Check if any toxic chemicals are used. If you or your family members have any allergies, it’s best to seek further information on the chemicals present in the cleaning products.
  • Are you able to provide references? Ask the companies to provide contact details of two referees.
  • Do you offer any form of guarantee for your work? Cleaners who provide good cleaning services always guarantee their services.

Hiring a domestic cleaner can be overwhelming, but if you get it right, you’ll be so glad for it once you’re chilling out in your shiny, dreamy kitchen come Friday night!
