While there’s no harm in indulging in a traditional chocolate egg at Easter, these keto desserts and sweet treats make for an ideal healthy alternative, without compromising on the fun element. From keto-friendly hot cross buns to “sugared” almonds, here are some of the tastiest low-carb, low-sugar treats to tuck into this Easter.

Dark chocolate and peanut butter eggs

For a keto-friendly alternative to a Reese’s Peanut Butter Creme Egg, use an egg-shaped silicone mould to shape the peanut butter, then dip it in melted dark chocolate and allow to set. For a glamorous touch, finish with a sprinkling of edible lustre dust.

And, if you can bear to share these dark chocolate and peanut butter eggs, you could arrange them in an egg carton and present them to someone special as a thoughtful Easter gift.

“Sugared” or dark chocolate almonds

A popular Portuguese Easter tradition sees godparents giving homemade sugared, caramelised or chocolate-coated almonds or “amêndoa” to their godchildren. As almonds are egg-shaped, they symbolise fertility and new life.

For a keto-friendly alternative to sugared almonds this Easter, coat your almonds in dark chocolate or egg white, sugar-free sweetener (like erythritol or allulose) and cinnamon, before roasting them in the oven.

Keto-friendly hot cross buns

It wouldn’t be Easter without a hot cross bun or two! Substitute traditional hot cross buns with a keto-friendly alternative to reduce your sugar and carb intake.

All you need to do is follow a traditional hot cross bun recipe, using almond flour and a sugar-free alternative or sweetener in place of bread flour and caster sugar.

Lemon mousse

A zesty, citrusy dessert always makes for a refreshing way to round off a hearty meal. A big Easter Sunday roast dinner with all the trimmings is no different.

An airy lemon mousse will make for a luscious light alternative to lemon meringue pie or tart for an Easter Sunday dessert. Simply replace the sugar with sweetener and use lemon juice and gelatin in place of lemon curd.

Dark chocolate mini egg cheesecake

Crammed with cream cheese and eggs, cheesecake is the ultimate keto dessert. Simply replace the sugar with sweetener or another sugar-free alternative; and rethink the flour used in the base (almond flour works particularly well), and you’ve got a low-carb, low-sugar keto treat.
